May be replaced as Superman

Apparently, he's asking to be paid like an A-List actor.

My thoughts on this...I don't want him replaced because I think he has a good look. That being said, he hasn't earned A-List pay. The three movies he has been in were mostly shit. And his performance in those films lacked nuance and gravitas. He was mostly playing it as a dour, stoic, tortured, joyless, depressed guy that no one could relate to or like. Half of that wasn't his fault. Part of it was due to poor writing. And I think he should get the chance to show off his chops in a well written Superman film. Then, and only then (also if it does well financially) should he be considered for a pay bump. But if he insists on moneybags before this happens, then broom him fast and replace him. Hubris based on monetary concerns are unearned at this point. He's hardly been the selling point for these last three mediocre movies. In MOS it was Russell Crowe, BvS it was Ben Affleck, JL it was Gal Gadot. Cavill has yet to wow us in anything beyond his look.

He's a good Superman. Definitely has the right look.

Guess it's up to the producers if he's worth a list money to play the part.

reply

Oh he looks right, at least he would if they beefed up his hairline a little, but he's still a terrible Superman.

Of course I blame the writers for that more than the actor, but Cavill is still partly responsible. He doesn't bring anything to the role but his appearance, he's got no spark, no charisma, nothing that might help overcome the awful scripts he's given. He spends most of the films wincing and pouting.

stop giving fake news marveltard idiot he will remain superman forever he is best superman suck it haters

I linked an article to the news on the subject. And I never claimed to be a Marvel sycophant.

If you don't think everything DCEU is the best ever, in his mind you're a marveltard.

He's not very smart.

Think in the next few years his time as Superman would be over. The hype for a MOS post 2020 would be ending.

It’s simple, he sees A-list actor (prior to taking on the role of Batman) Affleck and on the cusp A-list actress Gal Gadot (who earned it from WW) making more than him and he uses his leverage as the playing the prime character to get paid what they are.

I don’t blame him. He probably only plays the role for another 1-2 films anyway. The entire DCMU franchise is in desperate need of a reboot.

I think if you replace him, then you might as well scrap everything else and start completely over. There are already a bunch of rumors that Batflack may not return as well. If there is no continuity with the characters it's hard to create an expanded universe.

reply

Justice League had some weak box office so I'm not sure he is in any position to demand a raise.

reply

He can demand raise all he wants. It's up to WB if they want to recast Superman.

I think that's just contract negotiation stuff. I never thought about it before but no, I wouldn't consider Cavill an A list actor. His films don't do well, even the ones that are supposed to. This Mission Impossible film is sure to be a huge success though. If anybody can wring a good performance out of Henry it's Tommy C. It's a shame WB couldn't commit to Synder's vision. Man of Steel really was just half a story in a lot of ways. It needed a sequel before the combined film-verse happened. Superman wasn't yet a complete character. And now they've already gone and killed him and brought him back. What a mess. If they really are swapping out Afleck as Batman, this would be the time to swap out Superman and just start over.

Getting anyone else besides Henry Cavill would only screw things up, even further. The DCEU is already on shaky ground with most fans and critics. Getting rid of Cavill is going to be a mistake, because people already hungry for his version of Superman. MOS did a disservice in introducing the character to millennials. The BvS was even more disappointing. Justice League was slightly better, but that's only because Superman was more in character (regardless of how short his screen time was).

With that said, I don't think Cavill should be requesting "A-list money." He hasn't proven himself to be worthy of that, since the scripts and direction that he has been given was lack-luster. What he should be demanding is to be allowed to show that he can play the character, in full. They should write the script to show Superman's nuances. They need to hire a director who understands the character's universe (as well as have the talent in structuring the film the way it should be).

It's obvious that producers of the DCEU don't have any faith in Cavill (why they never gave him any real chances...I don't know). Only demanding more than what they think he's worth is not a good move, on his part. Or maybe it's his agent, Danny. From what I've heard, she hasn't been giving him sound advice.

I agree on all counts. And I would take it a bit further and say that if he gets shuffled out like it looks to be the case with Affleck, they really should just start over completely. It's sad because DC (Comics) has better characters. But Marvel (Studios) has a better business model and smarter creative leaders. They understand that in order for these characters to be consistently successful in multiple films, the audience needs to be emotionally invested in them. We couldn't get invested in JL because they shoved all these characters together without any buildup. And they will only cripple any investment they did have by recasting them already. So if they recast, the entire universe should be rebooted. But Cavill is deluded if he thinks he is an A-Lister. He's super attractive, sure. But he doesn't realize that A-Listers do two things: create a performance so distinctive and unique that no one else could do it and...bring in the money. He hasn't proven himself of that thus far.
