typecast as superman

If Henry Cavill needs to STOP doing the Superman MOVIES! The guy is typecast as Superman! How many Superman movies has this guy done I think three now. The problem is being associated with Superman is not great now. Henry is getting older and he needs to expand his brand. Try something different like a comedy or a romantic drama? But please stop with the Superman roles! I guess because playing Superman probably pays well he takes it. But if he is serious about being an actor he needs a broad range of roles.

I don't think he'll get typecast unless he chooses to be. If he chooses to be only an action star, then so be it, it's not a bad road to go down..it can be lucrative.

the other reason he won't get typecast is because he has branched out a little by doing Man From UNCLE and he's got a movie coming out next year on Netflix. He's still young-ish and i've noticed he's not the only superhero actor that could have trouble with their movies outside of the superhero ones not being well received (ie The Judge for RDJ,Snowpiercer for Chris Evans, almost everything Hemsworth has been a lead actor in.. the Jason Bourne movie with Jeremy Renner).

the ones who are having the better careers seem to be ScarJo & Amy Adams.. their movies do reasonably well box office wise and sometimes they are up for award nominations.

maybe some of the guys need to look to their female counterparts and go for roles that are outside their comfort zone.

(i'm still holding out hope that Henry will play a non-superhero villain)

IMDB taught me: cynicism is praised. optimism must be stamped out wherever it can be found.

But the difference between HC and Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth is that both CE and CH have worked in more movies than HC in between their Marvel duties. CE made several independent movies and even directed one. Snowpiercer was actually well received by critics and was a hit in South Korea. It wouldn't have been a big hit elsewhere because of its very dark subject matter. CE knew he wasn't going to be starring in a big blockbuster when he went for that role, but yet he still did it.

Same with CH -- he made the effort to star in several movies, even as a "himbo" in the new Ghostbusters movie, and also more serious movies.

If you go beyond the "superheroes", you can look at Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson who played Harry Potter and Hermione Granger. Most of their movies outside the Harry Potter universe also didn't do well. But still they starred in other movies. Radcliffe even did a theatre play.

When I look at Daniel, CE or CH, I see actors trying to diversify their roles. Perhaps their game plan is star in a blockbuster, then go for other roles that may not pay as well or be big hits, but at least gives them a chance to broaden their acting skills.

I am not sure if this is HC's game plan, because he has mentioned in interviews he only wants to star in blockbusters and has not shown interest in independent films. (Sandcastles seemed to be a sudden move on his part, because he had a time following his withdrawal from Stratton).

I don't think you can compare HC's career with Amy Adams, as she has been starring in a lot of other movies prior to being Lois Lane, and again she goes for the independent/darker movies that may not do well in the box office, but is the type that will get awards. Same with ScarJo.

i'm saying her career is better, is more diverse. I don't think Henry will be like Chris Reeve where he turned down roles that actually could've helped his career (ie Pretty Woman) which is one of the reasons why Chris was typecast

the others within the superhero genre.. they may do better once they are away from Marvel (it seems that aside from henry,Ezra & Jason..DC casts veteran actors). this question was brought up on MovieTalk (about Marvel actors)

It makes NO SENSE to compare Amy Adams to Henry Cavil for one thing GENDER. Yes GENDER is a huge part in terms of roles an actor gets. Amy Adams is also OLDER than Henry Cavill he got some time to figure things out. The issue I got with Henry he needs to DIVERSIFY If he can do that he can have a long term career. Doing Superman sure pays the bills BUT if Henry wants to be known or remembered for more than just Superman he needs to push the boundaries a bit. But I hear Henry got a film on Netfix Sand Castle now that is a good move on his part.

Exactly.

You and me both girl.

The key is diversity. I guess you could only be one thing your entire career but why not play around with different emotions if given the chance. Everything can't be all about the money.

Or can it.

I think Henry can be Superman and be other characters but only if he wants to and, he's only 33. I wish he made two movies a year but hey.

What are we without the sky.

Agree. Reeves is the exact opposite of HC. Reeves turned down roles because he thought the script wasn't great (never mind the box office potential), but HC would jump on a role if he could detect the huge box office appeal of it.

the others within the superhero genre.. they may do better once they are away from Marvel (it seems that aside from henry,Ezra & Jason..DC casts veteran actors). this question was brought up on MovieTalk (about Marvel actors)

There had been many articles discussing this topic about how actors in particular franchises (not just super heroes) don't do well in other movies. Some of these articles mention that there is a "shift" in moviegoers habits in movie watching. According to these articles, the days when a star can really draw in a crowds is kind of waning as more people watch movies more for the concept behind it rather than who is starring in it (ie it's a another movie in a Marvel or DC universe, it's Star Wars, it's Harry Potter, as opposed to, hey so and so is in this movie, so I got to watch it). Sure there are some stars that by virtue of their name alone can bring in movie goers, eg Tom Cruise, Leonardo di Caprio, MAtt Damon and recently, Melissa McCarthy (as long as she's not messing up with a beloved franchise like Ghostbusters).

So it's not only the superhero actors, but the other franchise actors going through this...

It is unfortunate though that the role of Superman has consistently shown some "bad luck" for the actor who got the role... You couldn't find another character who has been around for such a long time, and each actor who played him didn't do so well outside the Superman cape. So naturally, people are wondering about HC. And I can't blame people for wondering because as mentioned numerous times on this board before, the other actors with superhero gigs seem to be working more than him. Doesn't matter if their other movies are flops, but they still seem to be working more than HC. Compare their IMDB filmography and HC's and CE's or CH's (even add in Benedict Cumberbatch since he now has Doctor Strange in his belt). One cannot help wonder what is going on with HC, and that is why this sort of threads and discussions keep coming up on this board.

Crushes should be like Kleenex -- soft, strong, and disposable.

I may be one of the few that thought the remake was far better than the original. Maybe I was just in the mood for a comedy but I laughed my arse off at them.

If Henry Cavill needs to STOP doing the Superman MOVIES! The guy is typecast as Superman! How many Superman movies has this guy done I think three now. […] But please stop with the Superman roles! Well, quitting SM is not going to happen. Besides the big pay checks, SM is part of the DCU. Also, it seems like MOS will finally be a proper trilogy. So, HC will stop or should stop being SM when WB is done with the DCU.

The issue I got with Henry he needs to DIVERSIFY If he can do that he can have a long term career. You know, not only the actors are unwilling (lack of better word) to diversify. It seems like the studios and financiers don't feel like straying from the usual formula too much either.

A good example seems to be the Stratton project that HC dropped out of last minute. If rumors are true, the producers showed the financiers 2 different screenplay for the same movie. The first screenplay was very close to the source material and a bit far away from the usual formula for that type of film while the second screenplay was a bit far away from the source material and very close to the usual formula for that type of film. Depending on which screenplay the financiers chose, HC, as one of the producers, had the choice to stay or leave. Apparently, the financiers chose to finance the second screenplay. Since HC seemed to have been fan (lack of better word) of the first screenplay, he opted to leave.

If all that is true, I’m glad that HC chose to leave. I hear the trailer of Stratton is meh and the film looks like a poor copy of some other bigger films. Some say it would have been CLOD all over again.

Also, I'm glad HC took a stand for creativity. Seriously, it seems like creativity has fled the film industry. Stop with all the remakes and especially the reboots. Stop using the same formula. Because it worked in the past doesn't mean it will keep working. People get tired of the same crap, too.

Anyway, in Sand Castle, HC is playing a soldier, something we haven't seen him play yet. And most importantly, he's uglier than sin. lol That's also something we haven't seen him play yet. 

So the man is trying to diversify as much as he can without losing his SM physique. That physique doesn't fit in all genres. And I, for one, wouldn't want HC to lose tons of weight for a role. Is not like he really needs the money. If other actors want to yo-yo with their health like that, that's their problem. Is bad enough that HC has to have that SM body. But I hear is better to maintain it than to lose it and start over. A constant weight seems to be better than one that fluctuates constantly and drastically.
