Did anyone know she dated Tony Danza, Steve Martin, and Mark Harmon in the 70's? She was a feature story in Closer last month. I wonder who Richard dated back in the day. It's sad Karen will never know her 5 nieces. I bet she would have been a sweet aunt.

reply

and

Barry Manilow
Mark Harmon

Her brother, parents, and The Carpenters’ managerial system conspired together to submarine all her relationships so they wouldn’t lose control over her.

Richard doesn’t seem to have dated anyone that well known.

reply

Barry Manilow came out a gay fairly recently (pauses for the 'only doing this to promote their flagging career and get some news items running' comments. No? I wonder why? But moving on.) which doesn't preclude them dating or having a friendly relationship. Without wanting to be intrusive - I just wonder how that works at an emotional level.

reply

I saw in a Facts Verse video, he married his cousin in law. I wonder if that is true.

reply

Richard married his first cousin, but they don’t share any dna because she was adopted. That said, his family were not happy about it.

You can read details in the book Little Girl Blue. (If your public library has hoopla, you can read it on their app for free.)

reply

Never heard of the word "submarine "used to describe monitoring and controlling someone before.

reply

Submarine was used in reference to ruining her relationship, as in they deliberately “sank “ [ruined, undermined, destroyed] her relationship with Steve Martin (before it barely even began). They threw obstacles in her way. When Richard heard she had a date with Steve Martin, he deliberately booked a recording studio for the same time, but lied to Karen, telling her it was the only time available.

reply

torpedo - destroy or ruin (a plan or project): fighting between the militias torpedoed peace talks.

reply

Where did you read that? I read Mark Harmon took her death hard.

reply

John (Softly) Adrian spoke a bit about his relationship with her here

There’s a lot of info in this book.
Little Girl Blue: The Life of Karen Carpenter by Randy L. Schmidt. Forward by Dionne Warwick

I mentioned in another post that you can read the ebook for free on Hoopla if your public library subscrbes to the service

reply

I read the book a little bit briefly when it first came out. It was pretty good. I will have to read it in entirety someday.

reply

I think torpedo is the right term.

She also dated Alan Osmond according to a site. If they had martied, that would have been intetesting. Marie also suffered from weight issues as a young girl, but her mom Olive counseled her.

reply

Gene Simmons claims to have also tried to hook up with her, and though she was flirty, it didn’t happen.

reply

He also dated Cher and Diana Ross for awhile. Prior to music fame, he was a school teacher in New York.

reply

Yeah that’s true!

reply

I saw Gene talk about meeting her. He never claimed anything sexual happened. They were staying in the same hotel and she wanted to talk to him so he went to her room. She was fascinated by groupies and why they did what they did.

reply

I always cry a bit at her wedding day photo. She so wanted to be happy but she married the wrong guy. https://i.pinimg.com/originals/15/63/a1/1563a1f632d02c8bdca3e92142730cf2.jpg

reply

Nice photo, nice smile - but this is a miserably sad thread.

reply

I wonder if most the posters actually know what they're typing.

reply

I read on one site her hubby deceived her and never told her he had a vasectomy. He was also a gold digger according to some reports. In addition, was emotionally abusive. Karen wanted to call off the wedding, when she realized she would never have children, but her mom talked her out of it.

reply

I read that too. An original tiger mom and dragon lady. So sad.

reply

Who knows, if she had not married him, she might have worked on her self esteem issues.

reply

I agree. So many things hinge on other things. If she married a man who was good to her and understood her and really loved her and she loved him she might have been seen herself completely differently. So sad.

reply

Sounds like you are repeating rumor and innuendo. Any credible sources?
