But chart success wasn't the most important part of his loyal following, especially in the 1970s and early 1980s. He was one of those singer-songwriters who spoke for his generation as it grew older with him. The albums were what mattered … though of course any artist likes having those Top 10 songs. :)

It’s true, only two of his songs cracked the top ten in the US. Doctor My Eyes and Somebody’s Baby. However, he has sold 18 million albums in the US, and many of them platinum or multi-platinum.

His albums sold a ton from the 1977 to 1986...all Gold or Platinum sellers. A couple even hit #1. That's GREAT chart success.
