The Last Tycoon - production begins 5 Jan 2017

As tweeted by the director/writer/producer Billy Ray;

I'm unclear on the number of episodes' ordered, 9? To make 10 with the pilot? So a production schedule of about 2 weeks for each episode, about 4 and a half months for filming.

Interesting to know what other writers/directors might join the project, Though Steven Soderbergh directed all episodes of his series "The Knick" and Cary Fukunaga did all "True Detective" season 1 it would be unusual for Ray to take on so much on "The Last Tycoon". And possibly to demanding a role for Matt to debut as a director as well.

Thanks, Andrew - so excited!!!

I feel as though I'm missing something or the link is perhaps in error? I don't see the info on episodes or directors. Are you saying Matt is slated to direct one of the eps?

reply

No, just speculation on my part about who is joining Billy Ray on the writing (& later) directing team.
Lots of actors' direct episodes on their own TV shows... Matt turned down the opportunity on "White Collar" because he was so fully occupied on that show, maybe one day.
Think script writing may appeal more from what Matt has said previously.

Touch wood! This would be great for him and would look good on his CV.

Thanks Andrew for posting this. I'm a little disappointed they won't start production until next year, was hoping it would be sooner. But maybe this gives Matt more time to be in AHS. For a time there, it seemed unsure if or how much he would participate. I assumed it might be because of his TLT schedule. Ryan is still teasing us as to what this season will be, but whatever... it looks downright creepy. The new adds with Lady GaGa, don't bode well for her.

I'd also expected TLT production to start sooner but isn't it great that 4 months is being spent on scripting 10 episodes, enough time to do the job properly. I often suspect to much TV scripting is rushed.

And good for Matt a more relaxed schedule on AHS allowing plenty of family time. Though I wouldn't be astounded if Matt found time for another project between AHS & TLT!!

I totally agree with you, about them having more time. They have such an impressive group of talent on this project, with the right amount of time and backing I think it will be fantastic. The wardrobes and sets alone are to die for, so excited for this project. The other good news I heard was the possibiity of more seasons, initially I thought it was going to be a one and done.

I believe in the old adage make hay while the sun shines, and Matt has certainly been holding true to that. He probably has some other projects in the works, hope Monty is one of them.

That's way later than I thought. My guess was they'd start this Fall. Wonder why the delay! I know Lily has been super busy with several new projects. Maybe Matt has something planned too.

Btw does production mean writing or the actual shooting?

Didn't Matt mention that writing on Monty was starting in September? Assuming that Matt has lots of input because of the vast amount of research that he's put into this passion project.

He wrote Nashville which was picked up and did several seasons.

This gives him time with family.
