If he was born and raised in the U.S. why did he have a British accent?

I know other people have asked this question on social media also, but no one seems to know. I saw him in the T.V. movie 'Hustling' back in the '70s and he had a British accent in that film like he did on 'The Jeffersons.'

Although to my English ear, he sounds like an American doing an RP English accent.
