Could they not write him back in as a, "ghost" character or something? It seems kind of odd that he left for his family and now he's back doing other stuff so soon. They should have just skipped his character and left him in the background so-to speak until he was ready to come back.
Can't you really answer to this by yourself? It's pretty simple - his acting hiatus was planned. Obviously it was not going to be forever, so obviously he'd also get back at some point. The creators of Lost couldn't just wait for the actor's decision to write their material. He was always a 2nd tier charachter in Lost anyway. And I think the end his charachter got was quite a treat for the little importance he added to the show.
