Who exactly decided to do away with all the stories in the star wars canon and start with a clean slate?
Disney? Or was it JJ's suggestion to Disney?
Maybe he was too lazy, or not talented enough to weave a story into existing canon, because the best he could come up with was a rehash of a new hope.

Disney wanted a clean slate in order to avoid paying royalties to any authors of the expanded universe. They only bought Lucas, they didn't want to buy the rest.
