Really born in Lincoln, NE?

I heard years ago that this was a lie she told in order to help get the part in "Boys Don't Cry"—the fact that she was actually "from" Nebraska—and it certainly would appear that way, as she seems to have spent her entire childhood in Washington, in addition to the fact that her father was in the Oregon Air National Guard.

Some sources list her birthplace as Bellingham, WA, which makes more geographical sense. Does anyone know more about this? Part of me wonders if this is just a white lie that she's kept up over the years.
