The Butler

Honestly, this one came out of nowhere for me. I had no idea James Marsden was up for a part in this film; it must have happened really suddenly.
I am stunned by the cast list.
I had heard/read about this butler a long while ago; he's pretty famous; he served eight Presidents.
They'll be filming in New Orleans (what isn't, these days) and the film is scheduled for release next year. I don't see a major studio attached to it, but with all that star power there, it shouldn't run into any trouble.

One thing, though, and I'm sorry to mention it.
James Marsden cast as JFK? Really? How will this happen? How can it be?

It's true that when JFK first became President, he was quite slender. But he had Addison's disease, and after a while, his face wasn't thin any more. Are they going to deal with that?

Also, will James have to effect a Boston accent? That will be quite something.

I really think he looks more like RFK than JFK. But whatever. I'm glad he's in the picture with all these other really famous people and good actors: (Alan Rickman, Robin Williams, Oprah Winfrey, Nicole Kidman, Melissa Leo, Liam Neesam, John Cusack, Cuba Gooding, Jr, Forest Whitaker, Jane Fonda, and others less familiar to me).
I neglected to say that Forest Whitaker will play the Butler, and Oprah Winfrey will play his wife. Melissa Leo will play Mamie Eisenhower. Really, when I consider all these Presidents, and matching them up with all these actors - it's amazing to me.

I can see this thing becoming major. Am I wrong? I'm pretty excited, really. And I think that The Butler will be a fun IMDb board. It has already started - a few months ago, actually.

Some of the casting choices above - and the people they are supposed to portray - also are, uh, interesting.
And I'm trying to think of the eight Presidents in the story. If it begins with Eisenhower, then it would be Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford. Carter, Reagan, and George H.W. Bush.
Unless it starts with Truman, then Eisenhower and the rest, leaving out Bush. Could it start earlier than Truman? Roosevelt? I definitely need to do more research on this.
Did I leave out anyone? I think I have them in correct order. (I just looked them up and had forgotten Bush 41.)
My mind is boggled, really. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it listed under James Marsden's name.

You're right, it really came out of nowhere. I tried to find some news about it, but i think it's an error: i read on Collider.com tha matthew McCoughnahey (of course i wrote the name wrong :-/) was cast as JFK. So either he became unavailable or this Jimmy casting is not right. The cast is really great though. It'd love him to be in this movie!

Mau, how can it be an error? It's listed in IMDb both under his name, and in The Butler, it has his name as JFK. Maybe McConnaughy (I can't spell it either) pulled out of the project. His loss: James' gain.

Things like this happen, though, don't they? Owen Wilson pulled out of 2 Guns, and so did Vince Vaughn, and James is in. Yeah, he might be second choice, but many great parts have come for various actors just because of this. I saw on TV for example, that when the producers/casters were looking for a Dorothy for The Wizard of Oz, their first choice was Shirley Temple. The only reason Judy Garland got the part was that Shirley Temple's movie studio head refused to let her go; they wouldn't "lend" her to the studio making the picture.

When I think of all the people in this film, it takes my breath away. We just have to keep our eye on this one, and make sure IMDb didn't make a mistake. It would be a great chance for James.

Keep your fingers crossed - I certainly will.

On the news page for The Butler, there are plenty of reports that Matthew McConnaughy has pulled out of the role, with no confirmed reports of who has taken it on. JM may have the role (I hope so)but IMDB casting is not very reliable. It looks like the film is sorting out make up (from a news report) and should be starting soon. We should know soon.

Thank you very much for this info. I've been looking for those very news reports but couldn't find anything. I'm glad you're more on top of things than I am.

Interesting that the film is sorting out makeup. Marsden is also scheduled to play a Navy Commander in a film entitled 2 Guns. I'm thinking about the length of his hair. But as I remember it, JFK kept his hair pretty short as perhaps in his own Navy days, and had a very precise haircut.

So perhaps Marsden can pull off both roles at the same time. Both films are supposed to be shooting in New Orleans, so all he'd have to do is commute from one part of town the the other.

I also have a question about whether he's continuing his role in 30 Rock. Hair length may not be a problem there, but perhaps scheduling will be a bit of a challenge.

I kept googling and found something: I think it appeared in the New Orleans Times (and Picayune?).
It's an article about McConaughey who is heavily involved in the Dallas Shopping Club film. He's been working on the script, also.
This has been a project of his for quite a while, and he is not giving it up for The Butler, since they both seem to be going into production at the same timd.
McConaughey said it wasn't the "accent work;" he had been doing accent work for years, he said. No, it's about this other film.
This may have cleared up the confusion I was having.
Onward, James. Maybe now I can relax a little.
I hope he can do accent work...

reply

He's very good with accents. I've listened to interview where he did different accents, so no worries for this. It seems to me all these people are up for small roles, so i'm sure that since THE BUTLER has already started pre-production by the middle of august Jimmy Could be free from both 2 GUNS and this one. And he Could start 30 ROCK as well

reply

I want it all.

Honest to God, if I had money to burn, I'd buy up Nailed and have it distributed as a DVD if nothing else. It's not fair for a film to just die like that.

And while I'm at it, as long as I'm spending money I don't have, I'd do something about As Cool As I Am, too.

But Small Apartments? Maybe James is good in that one, but looking at the main guy in it - ugh.
Sorry, Main Guy, whoever you are.

reply

He will certainly be good in SMALL APARTMENTS too, but I really don't feel the need to see that movie. I won't. It's gross.. both the concept and the story. At least I think without even having read the book. Sorry :-/
