Credits systematic racism for making her work harder.

Hah! That's funny. She kills two birds with one stone. Patting herself on the back cuz she's clearly succeeded and implicitly giving people that gave her shit over the years a giant 'Fuck you'.

well just like any other actor or actress who is not happy why dont they produce their own movies? After all studios and producers are like any other businesses and companies, there are decision makers who take decisions so who is she to criticize them? Like a basket ball player not being drafted by any NBA team, it's life..

reply

She should look in a mirror, the reason she has to work harder is that she is uglier than the competition and the public would rather watch attractive actresses instead of ugly ones.

reply

What are you talking about? She's in her fifties and remains a gorgeous woman!

reply

Nope. I remember her when she started and while she did look better 20 years ago, she was never gorgeous or even pretty. She was average at her peak.

reply

You're nuts of you think this is average.

reply

Stop looking at her tits and just look at her face. She is average at best. I've seen lots of more attractive women than her. She looks like someone that just had a bad face lift in that photo.

reply

She's had an amazing career. I guess systemic racism wasn't all that powerful.

reply

If you're smokin' hot apparently.

The irony is that she doesn't realize that "systemic" racism favors Asians. Asians are statistically shown to have more wealth than whites in America..

reply

And that's just wrong ! We shouldn't let it happen ! (sarcasm alert)

reply

we need a sarcasm font on this board. just a simple new tag that jUmMblES the case of the characters might do it.
edit: I tried to add an example [sarcasm][/sarcasm] with angle brackets but they were stripped out.

there were millionaire and successful jews in Europe in the 1800s and early 1900s'. I guess there was no antisemiticism.

you need to brush up on logic.

reply

I remarked on its power, not it existence. Nice guess.

reply

you are 100% right I changed what you said. so lets do the same thing

"Jews had amazing wealth and power. I guess anti-semiticism wasn't all that powerful in the 1800s and early 1900s"

reply

IMO shes a mediocre actress with no range. She should consider herself lucky shes had as much success as shes had.

reply

* works hard to gain success * (Just like anyone else who has gained success from nothing).

"Look how racist the system is!"

reply

You think Asians get the same opportunities white people get?

reply

So with systemic racism she means affirmative action?

reply

She is bitter she is not being offered roles anymore and she is lashing out. The truth is, it has nothing to do with racism. She just aged out of the types of roles that made her famous, just like countless actresses before, during, or after her. Just looking at her era, Julia Roberts, Meg Ryan, Drew Barrymore, Demi Moore, Sharon Stone, Kim Basinger, Holly Hunter, Michelle Pfeifer, Andie McDowell, Kate Winslett and others all suffered the same fate. Like all these other actresses, Liu was cast in the 90s because she was young and hot. Once she wasn't young and hot anymore, she didn't get cast as often (although she still has a career that 99.999% of aspiring actors would envy). Maybe you can call it institutional ageism, but its not institutional racism.

reply

30+ years ago it was quite rare for Asiatic actresses to play 'ordinary roles' in TV shows. I remember it was quite a big thing when Lucy Lui appeared as a lead in Ally McBeal. I agree there is rampant institutional ageism but at the time she pushed through to lead roles there was also more unthinking racism.
But also, I don't think Kate Winslet should be on your list. She's younger than the others and has pursued a career that will probably side step the usual ageist brick wall that awaits most actresses - and at least some actors for that matter.
