When he first arrived on the scene he had an intimidating screen presence. He was believable as a legitimate movie tough guy. But now, he's kind of scoffed at. Is it because he let himself go? Is it because he never really established himself outside of a couple of franchises?
He's made a lot of money off is ridiculous fast and furious equals, but yet his career almost feels unfulfilled (as an action star, I mean)

Yeah, but only after a lot of failure. he initially refused to do any sequels, but once his career failed he went back to F&F, Riddick, and XXX.

Maybe it's because this isn't the 80's and early 90's anymore, so we've moved on from action stars like Stallone, Van Damme or Schwarzenegger. The "old action stars" are nostalgic and fun, but now we want vampires. He's also not a good actor. I love him, don't get me wrong, but with the exception of the tough guy roles, he's not really good for anything else.

shareI think part of the problem is he arrived in Hollywood just as things were starting to change. Today there aren't really "action movies" like there used to be in the 80's and 90's. It's all about franchise/superhero movies now. Vin was able to catch the tail end of the action movie age, but then that age basically died out. Fortunately for him he was able to take the action movies he already starred in like the F&F series, Riddick and now possibly XXX and turn them into franchises.
