there’re a lot fewer posts here for selma blair than i would expect.
any idea how they determine which topics to delete? elsewhere i see posts that were started long long ago and that haven't been responded to in ages...regarding very obscure topics
The more frequently new threads get posted, the more frequently old threads are deleted. If you're seeing ancient threads it's because no one's started a new thread in a long time.

i see, thanks. so each actor or movie is allowed a certain number of posts, maybe? then the old ones are deleted as new posts are made, and the number is kept fairly consistent. i still wonder why selma blair gets 21 posts and old obscure foreign films hardly anyone comments about anymore get 60. anyway thanks
shareI don't think it's a fixed number. I think the thread limit actually goes up the more frequently people post. So if some board doesn't see any activity for awhile, the old threads from the last wave of activity will remain and eventually start to disappear (for example, Paris Hilton's board is so dried up now it looks like a tumbleweed will pass through it at any moment). On the other hand, if a board that hasn't been active for awhile suddenly gets a flood of new discussion because the person is in the news (i.e., Selma Blair being removed from that flight), then the really old threads will suddenly vanish. It's more about keeping the board current than it is about keeping the number of threads fixed, but the rate at which threads are removed is slower if the activity is low. If a board has so many threads you need to navigate multiple pages it's because people on there make new threads on a daily or hourly basis.

ah, thanks. anyway i’d be curious to compare the cost of maintaining the site as it is now with what it would be if they kept everything. there’ve been some really creative, thought-provoking discussions that went on for a long time and, with great effort and frustration, resolved a lot of interesting things...then they disappeared...then years later someone else started them all over again....
shareIMDb has a poster bias, it's no secret. I've had my threads deleted months later and yet threads with no replies from 2004 still remain.
IMDb should be preserving history not deleting it, 'The Polar Express' and the 'Dinosaur' boards were wiped clean. I would've liked to check out posts from when the movie was released, sadly that is no longer possible. It's like before 'The Dark Knight' was released, the speculation among people is very interesting ten years on, luckily I found a topic about it on a discussion forum from 2007. I think it's about time IMDb mods came forward and told us the truth, so many people contribute to this site and are always asking why they delete certain threads.
