Her career is pathetic, and her personal life doesn't seem to be much better: 30 years old, unmarried, no children.

That's not a failure, that's a really common 30 year old woman. A woman doesn't need to be married, have children or have an A list career to be deemed successful. A failure is a low life who lies, steals and cheats with no pity.
