Anyone who wants to defund the police should look at what happened when they defunded the public mental hospitals in the 1970s and 80s.
Yes, there were serious problems and abuses, people suffered in those places. The idea was to shut them down and replace forced institutionalization with social supports, outpatient care, and appropriate housing... which never materialized after the hospitals closed. Instead, the mentally ill were abandoned to wander the streets, without support and unable to care for themselves.
Ya think something similar cant happen with defunding the police, and supposedly beefing up alternative services?
We have this moron for president, and somehow people think everyone is equally capable of creating some comfortable life like it's learning A-B-C. The US is the richest country on the planet and treats our citizens like they are acceptable losses, while the far wrong cult lectures how crappy these people are. What an ugly turn this country has taken.
shareI admire his courage.
shareThere really isn't much of a movement. Taking more citizen control of police departments has to happen at the city/county level. Making a national issue out of a local issue only dilutes their goals of reforming dirty/incompetent police departments.
Barkley's criticism is cute and funny, but unremarkable for the most part, just like his basketball insight.
Thank you for saying this.
shareThat's the thing, reforms are needed, but they arent needed equally everywhere. There's a hell of a big difference between my local police that dont seem to do much but respond to noise complaints, and the LAPD.
Start with the LAPD!
L.A. Sheriff's department as well. They actually have a secret Gang within their ranks running their own rackets.
shareBarkely is a dope. He's entertaining and I like that he's candid, but he's not a credible spokesperson for anyone but himself.
He admitted he's not a role model, so why should anyone listen to him?
