Appreciated her candor and honesty

Two days ago on the news Internet, Anne Hathaway - in an interview - expressed candidly that she is beginning to lose roles to younger actresses but philosophically she accepts it with grace because as a twenty-something herself, she took advantage of Hollywood's ageism preference for pretty actresses in their twenties. Now that is a terrific example of how someone ages gracefully, especially in the entertainment industry where youth and looks are paramount. And then I especially mean the film and television industry where for women, ageism works its worse. Readers out there, if you live long enough into your 40s and 50s, you will 'personally' witness actors and actresses reach their peak as Hollywood sex symbols in their late twenties and into the thirties, then start to lose their looks and sexual charisma due to Father Time. And then you might be shocked at how some actors don't age nicely and start to really look unattractive. Don't troll me on this. It's a fact, not my opinion and a fact can't be opined upon. The supermarket tabloids are famous for paparazzi photos of actresses caught on the street without makeup and some of thos actresses in their mid-thirties and older are practically unrecognizable. You'd walk right by them. Back to Hathaway. I give her great credit. She's one of those lucky women who will stay attractive for a long time due to good genes and she takes care of herself. (Hard partying, late nights, cigarettes, lots of booze, and drugs will all age a person before their time.) But even Hathaway will not be able to delay Father Time forever. Look at photos of Hathaway from five years ago and even now you can tell the difference. She's still pretty and I would tell that to her face. And I love class and good manners in a woman.

I remember another candid actress, Kristen Swanson of Buffy the Vampire (1992) movie fame. She's something of a one-hit wonder who couldn't parlay that movie's great success into bigger and better and she remained in the middle of the B-list. Swanson told an interviewer that she would not date a man who didn't own a tool box. That's one of the smartest things an actress has ever mentioned. Bravo for her. I own a big toolbox and her comment made me swell with man-pride. Actress Ali Larter, over ten years ago, said that she preferred a guy with a paunch, reportedly because the buff guys were too self-centered, not balanced, and high-maintenance to themselves.

It's fine that she said it, because it's true. It makes complete sense as well from a purely business point of view as well. What's the primary market for movies? The correct answer is 15-30 year olds, so movie studios invest most of their time (money) into that market. There's no reason why they would (or even could) cast Anne Hathaway in those types of roles, when those types of movies are there to attract young audiences. Those audiences want attractive people their age, or at least close to their age.

She did take advantage of Hollywood's ageism and she was able to spin it off into a respectable career because she has actual talent. The actors and actresses that do not have as much talent will (rightfully so) fade away when their looks stop lending themselves to young adult movies.

Like I said though, I see no problem with what she said, it just seems odd that it even needs to be said since it shouldn't even be an issue worthy of conversation.

Same here, I really admire her for speaking about that.

True, because a younger look can not replace the talent, and the only thing she have is her look, even though she's starting to lose it. Soon she will be completely forgotten. Only talented and gifted actresses can please the audience with their roles no matter how old they are.

Nolan, I love you forever!

She's won an Oscar, I think enough people recognize her talents. Then again, you are obviously a biased Marion Cotillard fan since you're the guy who claimed that Cotillard's performance "saved" The Dark Knight Rises.  I find it funny and a bit sad when I see people like you who feel the need to continue commenting on actresses that you don't like for no good reason. Also she's not wrong, younger actresses are often favored over older actresses for their youth. The problem lies in the likelihood that she has been auditioning for the wrong roles.

While it's true that younger actors and actresses are often favored over older ones, I think Anne is also auditioning for the wrong roles. She should be auditioning for more serious roles suited for her age that aren't compatible for 24 year olds.

I think she was alluding to Jennifer Lawrence who's been cast for roles originally meant to be played by someone older.

Maybe, but Hathaway had never lost any roles to Lawrence.

Well, she was originally in mind to play Lawrence's part in SLP and the role eventually went to Lawrence.
