I haven't been this sad over any death outside of my family...

Judging from the comments here, I think many of you agree with this sentiment. It's a new experience for me as I've never really had such a poignant emotional reaction like this for anyone outside of members of my family have died.

I never met the man, never saw him in person, and probably don't know anyone who did and yet I still feel emotionally gutted by his passing. I certainly wish I had been granted such an opportunity, but my life never afforded me the opportunity. The best way to describe it is to say that I feel a sense of loss; a hole wherein no other could have or will ever be. Obviously, like all feelings, this isn't constant, but every time I see him in a movie or on television I feel it.

I'm not sure how or why, but it's clear that this man had a profound impact on many people. Perhaps it was his good nature, his positivity, his smile, the way he conducted himself, his work as an actor, his life outside of acting, or some combination of these, but he was undoubtedly able to find a place in the hearts of many who never actually knew him.

Rest in Peace Michael, you've more than earned your rest. You are one of very few who left this world in better shape than it was before.

I don't think its weird or that you should feel bad for feeling the way you do.

The way people reacted to his death? Ive never seen that before in all my years on the internet...I mean, sure there were a few mean nasty 'trolls' but they got shot down quickly!

I think its a huge lovely legacy for his short life that people still remember him fondly and y'know? Ok we may have never met the guy but for someone to have this huge an impact on people? He couldn't have been doing anything wrong!

Some of his films are still hard for me to watch, esp The Green Mile but I just think that he was one of those people who just get to you in that special place in your heart for the way he lived his life and for who he was as a person! :)

I could not agree with you more and your posting was so eloquently put that I couldn't have said it better myself- and that's a helll of a compliment! I didn't know he'd passed until seeing a tribute to him on a rerun of Bones, and I literally cried over the loss. I've never met him either but like you, I was touched by his warm character through the roles he played on television. The world has definitely lost another wonderful entertainer, but God apparently needed to bring him home- maybe heaven was a little dull for him lol.
R.I.P. McD, you're sadly missed but fondly remembered.

Beautiful tribute. Hubby and I were just watching Armageddon and reminiscing on how wonderful he was. Sorely missed.

He had a great vibe about him. There was a genuineness that is usually pretty rare among celebrities. And he seemed to be pretty humble, and he really loved his mom, and he was a talented actor who maybe didn't get as many worthy roles because of contributing factors (most notable his size and physically imposing presence). It didn't affect me on a personal level - I've lost a lot of loved ones, including both parents and a brother, and it certainly wasn't like that - but I was genuinely sad when I heard of his passing. Some people shine a light... a light went out when MCD passed.

Saying "I apologize" is the same as saying "I'm sorry." Except at a funeral.
