Who would replace him?

They couldn't. Moe was in the process of replacing Larry with Emil Sitka when he came down with the cancer that killed him. When he died they decided the act could not go on.

Moe is what made it work. The whole premise was a smart and competent guy working with 2 lazy dumb guys. At least the funniest ones were.

I totally agree the stooges wouldn't be the same without Moe since he was the brains of the group, I also didn't realize how funny Moe can be with his wisecracks while dishing out punishment, I feel Larry was a little more competent than Curly/Shemp.

Larry was more competent than Curly who I did not like. He's annoying. I like Shemp. I found him competent at times.

Why didn't you like Curly? Me he was my favorite stooge, I do like Shemp a lot, I do admit I thought Moe & Larry were funnier during the Shemp era than the Curly era.
