Schindler's list quote

I went to see John Williams live at the barbican in 1996 and he told a short story about how Steven Spielberg wanted him to score the movie, saying that he was daunted to do so, saying you sureley need some one who is better ( or words to that effect ) to which Spielberg said " I know but there all dead "

reply

Was Spielberg being ironic, sarcastic, or was he teasing Williams? I mean, "You're the best we've got because everyone else is dead" is not a very complimentary remark. A complimentary remark would be something like, "John, we do have other composers, but you're the only one I can envision as being perfect for List."
Or maybe Spielberg was kidding Williams about his longevity?

reply

He basically said John is the best composer alive. I don't think there's a better compliment than this.

reply

he was comparing him to beethoven and mozart you dumbass
