Tribute viewing

Is anybody watching anything in Max's memory? I've been meaning to check out The Emigrants (1971) for years so have decided to set aside three hours and finally watch that. It is often cited as one of his finest performances, and as a bonus co-stars the ever-wonderful Liv Ullmann. I shall hopefully check out the sequel The New Land shortly, too.

I watched The Emigrants and found it completely engrossing throughout its lengthy running time. Von Sydow and Ullmann are excellent and it is exquisitely shot. I am now excited to see the sequel The New Land.

For anyone who's interested, there is a good copy of The Emigrants with English subtitles here: https://ok.ru/video/1694875585134

I have also borrowed another well-regarded MVS film, The Desert of the Tartars, fro my local library and will watch that later this week.

Love Emigrants/New Land and was so pleased the Criterion Collection released them a few years ago in their original Swedish running times rather than the abbreviated versions released in the US in the 70s which for years remained the only versions available in the States. Liv Ullman has said somewhat surprisingly that her favorite role was not in one of her many classics for Ingmar Bergman but as Kristina in Jan Troell's films.

That’s interesting about Ullmann - especially given her lengthy personal and professional relationships with Bergman. Kristine is such a moving and beautifully played role, but I do personally feel that two or three of her Bergman roles are stronger and more clearly demonstrate her immense range.
