He was headed in the direction of Cuba Gooding, Jr.

Luckily, Lee Daniels's The Butler has helped salvage Forest Whitaker's career.

I was afraid that Forest Whitaker was gonna languish in the direct to video/DVD market much like Cuba Gooding, Jr.

Coincidentally, Cuba also had a supporting role in Lee Daniels's The Butler and he was singled out for his performance in that movie. Word has it that Lee Daniels's The Butler could potentially launch Cuba's comeback to the big screen.

Most of the films he did during that period were intended for a wide release but got a DTV or VOD/limted theater release because of poor reviews and/or poor test screenings.

I agree, I noticed he had quite a few direct to dvd films as well as the Criminal Minds gig - I thought it was a major step backwards. He pretty much followed Cuba's pear shaped career, though I think Forrest is clearly more talented.

He's not in the clear - Cuba had a few theatrical films in the midst of his direct-to-dvd spiral.

He actually produces and directs. He directed Friitvale Station. He's done 114 films. I don't think Daniels did him a favor. It's the other way around. Read his filmography. That's the purpose of imdb....

Cmon, hes a league above. Even with so so material he always elevates things.
