He reminds me of being a little kid

I was just a little kid when "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" and "Mary Poppins" came out. In fact, they were released before I was born but back then they'd often re-release movies to the theaters even several years later and that was how I came to see these - probably when I was 5-6 years old. Then they'd show them on TV ONCE a year back then and it was a real treat. I can remember they'd show "Chitty" on Christmas eve for a long time back in the 70's. I know he's still very much alive but I think I'll feel like a part of my childhood will be gone when he dies. I think kids loved and could relate to him because he had a child-like presence about him. Anyway, long live Dick Van Dyke, a true class act!

I was born in the 80s, after those were long since out, and I still know what you mean. Thanks to TV Land, etc., DVD feels like this great part of childhood. And the best part is, he still seems like a genuinely great guy, so there aren't any of those "years down the road we found out he.." stories that so often tarnish childhood media memories.

I couldn't agree more. Even today he is still singing and dancing and happy and upbeat. What a treasure he is.

OP, I totally agree. I can remember seeing the movies in theaters and then seeing them on TV....such a great part of my childhood.
