If you're going to choose your own name, why go with Rip Torn? Might as well call yourself Smash Break, or Drown Waterlog, or Punch Kick. His name is just annoying.

Oh, sorry to bust your bubble, but this excellent actor grew up in an age when "stage names" were the norm & expected by the viewing public. Why? I don't know, at the time, Hollywood heavy hitters made really stupid ideas. Thank-you for your thoughts.

You obviously didn't bother to check any facts before posting your comment. It's pretty easy...because it's right here on this website!
"Rip Torn was born Elmore Rual Torn, Jr......"Rip" is a family name, taken by generations of Torn men and bestowed on Elmore by his father, who was also called "Rip".
