Walter Mitty is supposed to be a journey of self discovery. But how does Mitty discover himself? By traveling the world! And how do you travel the world? uh, with money? YASS! With money!

The tourism industry thanks you, mister! Those who will be inspired by your movie to find happiness and stuff, will buy tickets to Thailand, Spain, Brazil, and other nice destinations, if you know what I mean.

I think it's more of a way to demonstrate how dull his life really is. No family or significant other to spend money on to have fun together. He isn't adventurous, not spending his money on hobbies. So he could very likely afford to travel like that. Also that he lacks any kind of wondrous life that he probably just thinks that's the best way to experience "life" for the first time for real. Travel is great for those who can afford it definitely and I think he'd be able to.
