'L Word' Up for Shepherd
'Moonlighting' star joins Showtime series

Cybill Shepherd is headed to Showtime's drama "The L Word" next season.

The former "Moonlighting" star has signed on for 11 episodes of the show, playing the vice chancellor of the fictional college where Bette (Jennifer Beals) is taking graduate courses, the showbiz trade papers say. The character, who's married and has kids, starts reconsidering her sexuality at middle age.

The role will be the first extended series work for Shepherd since her CBS sitcom "Cybill" in the late 1990s. She has starred in several TV movies -- two of which had her playing Martha Stewart -- and done a handful of guest appearances since then.

Shepherd is the second high-profile addition to "The L Word's" fourth season, which is due next year. The show has also added Oscar winner Marlee Matlin ("The West Wing," "Children of a Lesser God") as an artist who "catches the attention" of Bette.

Shepherd won Golden Globes for both "Moonlighting" and "Cybill" and is a four-time Emmy nominee. Her movie work includes "The Last Picture Show," "Taxi Driver" and, recently, the Sundance movie "Open Window," which is scheduled for a fall release.
