Is Paul right about Kevin Spacey?

I was sent a script yesterday. A very very very good script which screamed Kevin Spacey for the lead. I told the producer I’d direct it if they would make it with Kevin. The producer responded that that was not possible. I believe there are crimes in life but no crimes in art. Spacey should be punished for any crimes his actual person created. But not for art. All art is a crime. Punishing him as an artist only diminishes art. Put Celine in jail, put Pound in jail, punish Wilde and Bruce if you must, but do not censor their art.

First of Schrader is lucky he's not in jail for all the bad stuff he did back in the 70's/80's. My opinion is if you have harmed another person you need to be punished appropriately for that crime. Your Art doesn't give you a free pass in life. Also, as a public figure who's harmed others I believe great lengths should be taken to prevent them from any job associated with being said public figure.
In other words, Kevin Spacey should not be allowed to further his acting career until, as a bare minimum, he's paid his debt to society. Afterwards? not really but at least he's paid the price for his crime(s).

What bad stuff did Schrader in the 70 and 80's?

He had a very toxic relationship with Nastassja Kinski on the set of Cat People. When they got in a vicious fight Schrader threatened to put in the overtly sexual, full front scenes of Kinski, but was stopped when studio chief refused. He also had a brother named Leonard who was a screenwriter also, who Paul shafted from getting proper credit and money on some projects they worked on together.
