Most Influential Australian Actor?

Some of my friends point to Nicole Kidman.

"Mr. Rush, that smoldering, squishy-faced, classically proficient Australian actor"

She hardly even sounds Aussie anymore, not that that's necessarily a bad thing... but I usually say "Nicole who?"

I have to admit I've never really enjoyed any of her performances. Overrated? In my mind she is.

I much prefer Toni, Cate, Eric, Anthony and Miranda (so famous we'll stick with first-name basis here folks!)

I also love Erik Thomson... 'though he was actually born in Scotland I believe. Don't think he's very well-known overseas though? Most likely because he mainly acts for television.

I think I left someone off that list. There has to be someone else that I'm missing.

... hmmm... it might come to me later...!

... nope, it's gone.

Crowe is kiwi. Next you'll say Karl Urban is australian.

Rush and Blanchett are probably the most respected Aussie actors right now but in terms of influencing further generations, I'd actually say Mel Gibson and Judy Davis.

Gibson is more American than Australian now but back in the 80s he was the guy who made Hollywood take notice of Aussie actors. Casting him in Lethal Weapon and letting him keep his Aussie accent was a big deal at the time. When Crowe started out he was called "the next Mel Gibson" (after that, people like Ledger and Bana were "the next Russell Crowe" etc etc) Judy Davis also made great inroads in America in the 80s, years before Kidman was well known, and people like Cate Blanchett have cited her as a big influence.

No, Crowe is Australian in the same way Christian Bale is English. Would you get pissed off if somebody called Amy Adams American instead of Italian? You don't really know what you're talking about.

Rush and Judy Davis are the king and queen, respectively. Gibson had a huge hand in our crossover to Hollywood, but as far as Australian film goes, he's largely abandoned it. There are also legends like Jacki Weaver, Ruth Cracknell and John Bell, but they haven't changed the game as much as the aformentioned 2.

Rush and Davis ruled during that period of renaissance in Australian film. Landmark films, featuring landmark performances that were worldwide successes. They also managed to achieve brilliance in overseas productions and still help keep the Australian film industry exciting whilst they did it. I can't wait to see them back together again in The Eye Of The Storm.
