A product of the 60's

George Romero is a product of his generation.
He lamented how high hopes of the 60's failed. By the time the 2000's came around, he left the USA to live in Canada.

George was cynical about society. He was culturally progressive and his movies were revolutionary in their makeup techniques and social commentary. Unfortunately, he lost the progression of makeup special effects and only had a weak social commentary by the last three films. Land of the Dead was meant to vilify the Bush Administration, but was mixed in its message and not as good as George's previous work. Diary of the dead was poorly handled and the message fell apart with bad dialogue. Survival of the dead didn't register with fans.

He wasn't perfect, many of his movies are terrible, but he is still very important filmmaker.

He and Stephen King made a perfect duo; same genre, same politics, East-Coast Liberal horror barons. They collaborated on Creepshow and The Dark Half. Romero kind of dropped off after the 1990s, while King remained relevant, but I can see how much they were alike. I was surprised they did not work together more often. Romero seemed like a natural to adapt many of King's books.
