He seems like a nice and reasonable chap

...in his old interviews, now surfacing on youtube.

they say he was an asshole but eh, great actor. seems authentic on talk shows.

reply

There are quite a few chat shows where he could be outrageous.

He had a reputation as a hellraiser, and a heavy drinker.

I personally think he carefully cultivated his bad boy reputation, because that never really does a man's career any harm, or at least back in the 60s and 70s it didn't. Keeps you in the public eye and keeps the press writing stories about you.

There was one famous UK chat show where he walked on staggering, with what appeared to be a jug full of vodka and orange. Or was it...?

interesting. now that you mention this, it seems there were a few of in that era with the same MO. Wonder if he ran with Richard Harris, Burton, and Robert Shaw. What others were known for kicking up their heels?

Heck you just gave me an idea. I may need to start a list of 'bad boy brit actors from the 60s-70s' as a companion to my 'madmen directors' list, haha.

Peter O'Toole.

reply

Yes, Peter OToole. He was Harris' old running buddy. Good call, thanks.

Yeah man I think I am gonna start that list lol

reply

If being a drunkard and a thug is your idea of nice and reasonable.

reply

Fascinating. I didn't see that clip. The clips I saw showed him being gentlemanly and reasonable.

Russell Crowe on Oliver Reed:

"I have seen him walk down the street in Malta drunk as a lord and just hit anybody he got near to, even a man walking with his children. I just found that to be... not impressive."

"He drank himself to death. He sat on a bar stool until he fell off it and carried on drinking... lying in his own piss and vomit he continued to drink till he passed out. What did the tabloids say he drank on the day he died? Something like 30 beers, eight or ten dark rums and half a bottle of whiskey. In the end, he created such a weird energy around him that no one drinking with him cared."

but again, that's a comment by another person (and i am a huge crowe fan btw) but if you scroll up and look at my OP, i was talking about the youtube clips i have caught recently. on youtube. myself. not something i heard aother person share or relate.
