Was Deano often soused

...in his private life or was that just the Rat Pack image and some of his movie roles?

reply

That was his gimmick. Personally I always suspected it was more ginger ale than real booze.

Thanks!

I must admit I always thought he was a bit of a drunk but apparently you're mostly right - it was apple juice.

Agreed: Dean Martin epitomized COOL. I’m prejudiced: my mother loved Dean Martin. In Transporter 2, Frank Martin is out fishing with his French Police Inspector chum. They have the following paraphrased conversation.

FRANK You French think Jerry Lewis is a genius.

INSPECTOR Jerry Lewis IS a genius!

FRANK Think about it. Dean got a laugh while just standing there with a drink in his hand. Any idiot can get a laugh by falling down.

*RIM SHOT*

Jackie Gleeson drank booze live, on-stage. He came out in front of his 50s audience with a “coffee cup” in his hand, took a sip and said, “MmBOY that’s good booze!” Remember: this was all LIVE TV. I know: your parents were not even ovum or sperm back then. TV in many ways was more wild, course and crude in that era than it is now. Yes, we have porn on-demand whenever we want—but does that really overmeasure Barbara Eden’s bare navel in I Dream of Genie? That’s a close call, and Genie takes the win because of eroticism, adorability and class.

The classy dame is ALWAYS the hottest dame.

His drunk act was just that, an act.
