Tobey done as an A lister?

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Tobey is done as an A lister. The Great Gatsby will be his last.

Yeah, he is doing the Bobby Fischer movie (horrible choice given his size). But I just don't see where he fits in in Hollywood anymore as an A lister. I see a lot of supporting type roles in lesser movies. Maybe what I'm saying is that he can't carry a movie. Certainly, I'll get a lot of flack over this, so feel free to discuss.

This is so weird. It's 2 A.M. on the east coast and this was my last site to visit to ask this same question.

I never saw the appeal, I don't know how he even got to the A list at any point in his career. I do think his time is over. I'm not an artist, I'm more of a science person, so sometimes when actors misbehave IRL, that turns me off to their films. I've never heard anything positive about him,and he confirmed many rumors with his own behavior on a Howard Stern interview. On a shallow note, I think I'm taller than him, so he never appealed to me as a sexy leading guy. My friend who works in Hollywood said he married an extremely wealthy woman, so he really doesn't need A list money, even if he loses a lot gambling.

Tobey sees himself more as an actor than a "movie star". He chooses roles that he feels will stretch him as an 'actor'. I think he is comfortable in supporting roles in big films and will continue to star in other movies that most A list actors would never consider.
I don't get all the negativity that seems to come Tobey's way.

He hasn't transitioned into manhood enough. He's one of those actors who don't lose their boyishness and it's hard to picture him in any other role except that of a grown up boy.

He's old Peter Pan. Which gets creepy.

I completely agree. He doesn't care if he's on A-list or not. That's not his aspiration. He says he wants to tell good stories with the people he wants to work with, although I think this is very difficult to do now since many movie audiences seem to not care about the stories any more.

The problem with Pawn Sacrifice is that there is no deeper level to its portrait of tortured chess genius Bobby Fischer. It’s not Maguire’s fault, nor can I quibble with the work of such top-notch character actors as Liev Schreiber (as Terminator-esque Russian champ Boris Spassky), Peter Sarsgaard (as a priest who inexplicably becomes one of Fischer’s manager) or Michael Stuhlbarg (Shannon’s fellow Boardwalk Empire gangster).

But none of the characters’ motivations are ever made clear, and the film’s depiction of Cold War America is like a coloring book compared to Steven Spielberg’s brilliant new Soviet-era drama Bridge of Spies. Director Edward Zwick (Glory) pumps up the soundtrack with hits from the period like Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Travelin’ Band” and the Doobie Brothers’ “Listen to the Music.” Yet all you can really do is listen to the music, because there’s not much else going on.

Pawn Sacrifice downplays the uglier manifestations of Fischer’s mental illness, especially his anti-Semitism, perhaps in an attempt to get viewers to root for him. Yet he’s such an unpleasant character that we end up feeling like the pawns.

Nah, Toby Maguire is not done as an A-list actor but he does turn down many A-list movies.

Hollywood and "show biz" are all about contacts, who ya know, hang with, and Toby's connections include some of the best, most powerful, and he gets many offers.

His friends, repertoire, skill, and talent keep him on the A-list for sure.

None of this is new. I remember even when the first Spider-Man movie came out in 2002, there were many articles wondering if Tobey could ever be a leading man outside of the Spider-Man films b/c he was not traditional Hollywood handsome and he was on the short side w/o much charisma. The closest I think he came was Seabiscuit. Before that he did sorta leading man roles in movies like Wonder Boys, Pleasantville or Cider House Rules, where he played some goofy kid or young man type. But I don't think he ever played a real leading man leading man role like his best friend Leonardo DiCaprio. If the guy is happy doing smaller projects and support roles, who are we to judge? He's probably living a vastly better life then most of us on here anyways.
