i think he's finding his foot in comedy lately. i find him funny in some stuff i've seen him in lately.

No, Showgirls was just the final nail on his high profile career. Looking to his vita, I would assume David Lynch was not the most prosperous career partner. He didn't make much beside Lynch projects and his contract to a TV show in 1990 (even when Twin Peaks isnt comparable to any show in the 90s) was the actual end, as you had back then a TV career or a movie career. As TV career you live from your normal salary and that's it, you not get into movies. Clooney becoming a movie star was a big surprise, only from the mid 2000s this bareer nearly vanished.
So by signing Twin Peaks, he admitted back then, that he is not for movies and ended his bigger career.

I think he's one of those actors that people (re)discovered after his return to Twin Peaks a few years back. Showgirls was a bad film, but it's got a kinda cult following. There's a strong 'so bad it's (almost) good' camp.

I remember being very pleasantly surprised when he turned up on Desperate Housewives!
