Didn't hold out for Grade A roles, even after the Oscar win.

Always thought it was interesting to see her in mediocre TV movies, even after her Oscar win, where other actors would had held out. For example, Ellen Burstyn(whom she beat out for the 71' Oscar).

It's nice that she didn't feel too proud to do these Tv films and keep working, but did it do harm to her career?

at least Cloris knows when to show up

She has very unusual looks. Maybe she wasn't offered grade A roles because of that.

Or maybe the victim-type-working-single-mother roles just didn't appeal to her.

She and Madeline Kahn are my favorites. Lovely women who have killing comedic timing. They've always made me laugh.

Cloris won her Oscar while starring on MTM show. She did do some films (Brooks comedies, Daisy Miller) but she preffered TV becuse it was faster paced and kept her close to home and her 5 kids. She played in many a TV movie and some were quite good (Dying Room Only, Someone I Touched). Even the bad ones were pretty good because of her (Death Sentence, Hitchhike!). And now she's dancing with the stars showing she's still fulla piss and vinegar!

Since she is still going strong at age 82, I'd say she made the right career choices. She's fantastic!

Winning an Oscar NEVER guaranteed you any good work after. Can we say Marisa Tomei? You can go down the line and see that an Oscar never really meant much except on a resume. Aside from that roles for older women are next to non-existent, look at actresses today over 40 and how hard it is to get a good role, Cloris kept working and made some great movies for Mel Brooks and she is STILL getting roles as crazy grandmas in all kinds of movies and parodies like Scary movie and Bad Santa. How many 82 year olds are STILL RELEVANT?

Who is this Marisa Tomei you speak of?

Exactly my point. She won an Oscar for some silly movie in the 90's then never did anything again.

reply

Oh that Marisa Tomei! Actually, I know who she is, and while I sort of like her, the fact she won an Oscar means nothing to me. I mean, this was the same Academy that chose Julia Roberts over Ellen Burstyn! These were the folks that chose Cuba Gooding Jr. over William H. Macy (and James Woods and Edward Norton and Armin Mueller-Stahl).

I have my favorite performers, some of whom have won Oscars, but most of whom, like Cloris Leachman and Madeline Kahn, have not. Cloris' fans know how talented she is, and that's enough for her (and me).
