Overlooked?

Such a great actor, many of his performances seem ahead of its time especially in the 30's, he was truly outstanding in so many roles, especially as Bligh, Quasimodo and Henry VIII, he only won one Oscar which is baffling and should have been nominated many more times.
If you’d never enjoyed his acting, check him out on Youtube!

Good Lord, an actor of his stature has only one post on this board? How embarrassing for Moviechat!

That said, Laughton was always worth watching, but that's not the same thing as always being good. When he was good he was incredibly good, when he was over the top he was magnetic even if he bordered on camp, and on the rare occasions when he got it wrong you just couldn't look away. That's the downside of having that much screen presence.

And the same could be said of Bette Davis.

And the same could NOT be said of Stanwyck.

Yeah, Davis and Laughton were so magnetic that everything they did had the force of a hammer blow, and well, occasionally a hammer hits your thumb.

Yeah, it’s a shame that old forum didn't transfer fully, but it’s still fun to read posts from 10 years ago!

Agree. He was absolutely scary in the 1935 Les Miserables.

He had a tendency to ham it up and was one of the few actors for whom that was entirely appropriate. His Bligh is one of the great screen villains, a truly despicable creation. Laughton could always elevate any film, any role - I particularly like his late career performance in Advise & Consent.
