Comedic genius? Yes or No

One thing is for sure, he was original.

reply

nope

reply

I vacillate on it.

One of the more unusual guest apperances on Letterman circa 1982.

The line between douchebag/asshole and genius has never been so close.

reply

I like him. But no, I just wouldn't put him in the comic genius category. Letterman on the other hand I would.

reply

no. overrated. always found that eastern europen guy in taxi unfunny also that elvis impersonator. his appearances at letterman were kind of enjoyable but that's it.

reply

Kinda the same way here, I never found him to be a classic funny guy.

I do highly admire the creative aspects of his act.

He had just as much fun agitating the audience as he did making them laugh...like he got bored with making them laugh.

reply

Definitely an original but his act was to off the wall to consider him as a comic genius !

reply

Did you know that he was given a belt for "World Intergender Wrestling Champion" for 1982?

If this came up for auction, I would bid on it.

Shown on another Letterman appearance 1982.

Interestingly, the SNL Elvis/panty skit that Kaufman refers to CANNOT be found on YouTube. Wiped clean.

reply

Yes, but it's still no excuse for his poor behavior.

reply

Finally a positive vote.

4-1 against.

Mostly, professional comedians put him on a pedestal.

That was the weirdest part about him, most comedians get addicted to the laugh. He seemed to be addicted to playing with the audience, like a social science experiment.

reply

I mean, a lot of what he did, while not humorous, was still amazing social commentary. I wonder if Sacha Baron Cohen would have ever developed the way he did if there had been no Andy Kaufman.

Probably.

reply

No, he had some good routines, good Elvis impersonation. Genius? Hardly, unless you consider lip-synching to Mighty Mouse, wearing a fat suit, pretending to be Latke, and hurting yourself wrestling genius. But because he died young his legend was created where a few silly routines became genius, at least to those who promoted that for money.

reply

Aren't you forgetting about Tony Clifton?

reply

That's what I meant by fat suit.

reply

Oh, I thought you were talking about Martin Short and Jiminy Glick, that had me confused.

reply

You forgot about his panhandling skit, which was also highly original and got laughs.

Yes, Andy was definitely original. He was talented and bold as well. I don't consider him a comedy genius though.
