Died a tragic death at 50

I read that both his parents were Jewish. His dad hailed from Hungary.

His body was never found. His plane was shot down by the German Luftwaffe in 1943 over the Bay of Biscay and lost at sea. Actually, all those on board were never found.

Some historians believe he may have been working as a WWII spy. Others believe it was mistaken for an Allied military aircraft.

I was watching a documentary about that, very sad. I also read both his parents were Jewish. His dad was from Hungary. I have seen a few of his films. A poster on YouTube mentioned meeting an elderly man who stated as a child he and his nurse were booted off the plane so that the actor could travel on the ill fated flight. Boy were they lucky.

There’s a documentary? There’s always the story of making or just missing the flight that crashes. Around this same time, and ironically 6 degrees of separation with Gone With The Wind in that Clark Gable’s wife, Carole Lombard, was supposed to take a train home but grabbed a last minute flight, along with her mother and publicity agent. They crashed near Las Vegas. I think it was 1942.

What is the name of the documentary? Where did you see it? This was an exceptional man and liked by all. Best friends with Bogart, et al.

reply

It's not ironic. But it is an interesting coincidence.
