What's with the middle name?

I really don't like her middle name. I prefer to think of her as Marcia Harden. Yes, Gay can also mean happy. But unfortunately, that's not the common meaning. What's she using it for anyways? Nobody casually refers to somebody using their middle name. Does anyone else dislike her middle name? I wonder if even she likes it or not.

I had a dear friend with that middle name (she passed away). My middle name is Fay. We use to tell everyone what our names were, when we were little, because they rhymed. It was not a big deal. The original meaning is happy. The meaning people associate with it now, does not diminish the beauty of the given name of my friend or Marcia Gay Harden.

It's her name! What are you two? There is nothing wrong with her name.

reply

To be honest, it is kinda gay.

reply

she make gay men harden i guess

reply

Wow, for years I thought Gay was her surname. I thought that she had two surnames. 😂

It never crossed my mind that Gay is a middle name.

reply

Then you don’t have much of a mind to cross.

You’re PERFECT for the internet.

reply

Yeah it never crossed my mind as I am not from English speaking country, where I am from we don’t usually have middle names just first name and family name, here women a lot of times have two family names after they are married if they decide to both keep their maiden name and add their husband’s.

Also I noticed that celebrities rarely make their full names public, or they just have an initial of their middle name like Michael J. Fox, or Samuel L. Jackson. And I never ever heard of a name Gay. If it was an obvious one like for example Sarah Jessica Parker, of course I would know instantly it was a middle name. And sometimes people have family name that is usually a first name (Anthony for example). So name and surname thing can be confusing.

There are a lot of things to consider as to why I didn’t get it, which didn’t cross your mind. Should I say you don’t have a much of a mind to cross then?

And last point is; I never really thought about Marcia Gay and her name, I liked her as an actress and that is all, never was really interested in knowing more about her. I still don’t know shit about her, only that her middle name is Gay (which I accidentally stumbled upon when it was trending a year ago) and that she is an Academy award winner. I don’t even remember for which movie.

You are just perfect with your assumptions from three sentences that I wrote! I must be an imbecile just because I didn’t know of an unusual and not that common female name from completely other culture from another part of the world.

reply

You’re not an imbecile. As I clearly said, you just don’t have much of a mind.

As far as language is concerned, the primary formal meaning of "gay" is happy, cheerful. The use of the word to refer to homosexuals is secondary. It is actually slang that has come into colloquial usage.

As far as Marcia is concerned, Gay is just a name, and doesn't mean anything.

Agreed..

Oh grow up.
