Kathy Burke was in Tinker Tailor for like two minutes. Judi Dench had a great many scenes -- played with warmth and charm, a comic performance -- in a film that BAFTA voters clearly loved for some reason. I have no objection to her nomination, but to the film's praise generally.

I'll say it again: Judi Dench is only revered so highly because of her accent and class. Her popularity has got NOTHING to do with her acting ability.
Huh? You don't seriously believe that, do you?

Casting Judi Dench as Sybil Thorndike was groaningly obvious casting, and the BAFTA nomination certainly wasn't earned. But, to be fair, selecting Kenneth Branagh to play Olivier was no less predictable a choice, he was given very little to work with and he was nominated EVERYWHERE for his performance.
