Rodney Dangerfield wasn't an insult comedian. His standup comedy was self-deprecating... he played the loser who was never loved or respected by his wife, his parents, etc.

This was very different from his movie roles where, yes, he was typically the unrefined schlub insulting the highbrow types around him.

His serious role as the abusive father in Natural Born Killers was WAY outside his wheelhouse, and I was always surprised it didn't get more appreciation.

I'm not sure I would classify Rodney as an insult comedian, since he insulted himself mostly.
