Wonderful but Underrated

I think he's one of the most wonderful actors of the new generation but why do we see so little of him?

Well for awhile, Billy Crudup reserved himself mostly to independent films. He had the opportunity to audition for the lead in Titanic but turned it down because he didn't want the fame that would come with it. Apparently he's actually done that for many films including Ang Lee's Hulk.

Nowadays he's popping up in more mainstream movies which probably wasn't a hard transition because most filmmakers know how great of an actor he is. However, studios like certain people for leads and it's very, very hard to convince them that they should gamble on a new actor to lead a film. So the chances of Crudup getting a lead role in a commercial movie are very slim unless one of the top directors in Hollywood (Spielberg, Nolan, the Coens, etc.) decides that they want him.

Along with this, he's always been very selective of the roles he chooses. Part of the reason he kept to the indie circuit was because he was being offered more interesting or complex roles. In a recent interview I saw with him, he stated that he'd be up for a lead role in a big movie "if it was challenging enough".

So really, both the system and himself are keeping Billy Crudup from being a household name.

Without heroes we're all plain people and don't know how far we can go.

His acting looks top notch in Thin Ice, from what the trailer allows me to see. It took me ages even to recognize him.

He seems to be happy with mixing commercial films with independent ones.

Its that man again!!

Its not even really that he doesnt want the huge fame, or just likes doing indepenent movies. Its just that he makes a lot of money just doing voice work, and enjoys doing other things. He gets offered roles for big stuff all the time, but he doesnt need them, so he doesnt take them. When something comes around he really likes, he does it. Like he did Watchmen just because he didnt have much experience in the way of motion capture, and thought it would be interesting, and something new to try.

Easily one of the most underrated. Was incredible in Rudderless. Played the best J. Edgar Hoover to date too. Always good even if the films are not good.

Nothing is as it seems so I wouldn't judge by what you think you see.

Well, he just got cast as Papa Allen for The Flash movie

Billy Crudup really hit it big with ALMOST FAMOUS in 2000, after a few years in movies and theatre.

He was predicted to be a huge star, one of the brighter lights of his generation of actors. (FYI: His contemporaries include Hugh Jackman, Daniel Craig, Josh Brolin, & Will Smith.) He had looks, presence, and major acting chops, even a flair for comedy.

He opted for a lower public profile AND made some seriously bad choices (turning down THE HULK)... AND got some bad press for abandoning Mary Louise Parker (while she was pregnant with his child) for Claire Danes. Moviegoers, especially female fans, remember this kind of thing.

He still works in indies, TV, and direct to DVD projects, but he'll never have the career he might have.

It's all in the timing: for most mortals, you're only young and hot once.
