I am going through your star ratings. I have never been a big Joan Crawford fan, but as I have been watching movies for far more than sixty years, I have seen quite a few of her films over the years, and

My take is that the #20 and #19 films, Rain and Our Dancing Daughters, should be much, much higher.

I think Our Dancing Daughters should be in the top ten. It is not only good (7.4 rating on IMDB) but it is the movie which really made her a star and shaped her early flapper image.

Rain I think is also a strong top ten contender. Certainly one of her better roles.

I find Crawford's early flapper, or sexy, image much more appealing than the "Mommie Dearest" image from her fifties programmers which dominate this list. It also more or less diminishes the peak of her career. She was the top box office star in the Quigley poll of 1930, and #3 in 1931.

You've been watching films longer than me. I've only watched a few of the films on this video. How do you feel about the top 3, should Mildred Pierce be no.1?

At least I included those two films you mentioned, when I published the John Wayne top 40 video, one of his best films The Cowboys, didn't make the list at all! And it's one of my favorites. The ratings were too low. I should have just knocked it in there. Thanks for checking these out.

A question to ask.

Are we picking the best "Joan Crawford films" or the best films Joan Crawford appeared in.

She is the central star in Mildred Pierce, but only part of an ensemble in Grand Hotel and The Women.

I might be unique in this, but I think The Unknown is the most memorable film Crawford appeared in, but it is a Lon Chaney vehicle, and one of his creepiest. Still, Joan has a good supporting role. I have no problem with a #7 rating, but I can see it at #1 also.

My top five

Grand Hotel
The Women
Mildred Pierce
Whatever Happened to Baby Jane*
Our Dancing Daughters

*I am not as much into hag horror as some, I'm afraid. I understand that most rate this one much higher than I do.

Johnny Guitar--its campiness earns it a top ten position for me, but not top five.

Four of your favorites are in my top 5, so I didn't do too badly.

I will check out The Unknown, I've read about it but never seen it. Youtube probably has a copy available.

My criteria was the best films Joan Crawford appeared in but I ruled out cameos.

A friend of mine has produced a web page on Crawford with similar results, though he has Mildred Pierce at the top. He also includes box office stats. It's worth a look -
