In a 1937 article for Life magazine (naming Joan as 'Queen of the Movies') her year of birth was given as 1906 which correlates with the date Joan gave when enrolling at Stephens College in 1922.

It's interesting because when Joan married Douglas Fairbanks back in 1929 she was said to have given 1908 (when they applied for a marriage license I believe).
We've seen all those things. Can't be trusted. But it's not 1906.
