Actually, if it were a comma it would be considered a comma splice which would receive a fail on most college English essays. They are two independent clauses. I would have used a semi colon, but certainly not a comma.

yes, I was correcting someone who was correcting me. but initially I was correcting someone that corrected the original poster.
no, since I was correcting the grammar of someone that was correcting someone else's grammar, its allowed. correcting peoples spelling and grammar was hip in the 90's but not anymore, now its just petty.
