Why does sentencing take so long?

So, Mr. Cosby's guilty verdict was reached in late April. His sentencing will be a full 5 months later, in late September.

Why is there this long time lag between the two events? Is it just because the court has to wait for an opening in the hearings calendar?

It seems like they should just get on with it.

My dear Catbookss + Dazed:

I come to you penitent, and ashamed. The truth is, I threw myself into a heady, unwise relationship with another site. All the signs were there that it wasn't working...yet I foolishly shut my eyes to them. I WANTED TO BELIEVE IT COULD WORK. Finally I could no longer ignore the posts on the wall, and walked out.

I hope to heal quietly here, and rebuild the relationships I so recklessly cast aside...all for something "new".

Ahhh, Cookie, you ignorant slut, you (™)! I was worried about you, and am pretty sure I'm not alone.

WHAT could have befallen her??? Taken away by ebil Hollywood projects? By aliens, legal or illegal?? Did the ILLUMINATI finally catch up with her???

I'll have you know I was reduced to stalking your old threads and posts when I was in need of a laugh 😡

But, because we're a forgiving and 😇 bunch, we forgive you for throwing yourself into an unwise and unappreciative relationship.

At this other site, we weren't even allowed USERNAMES. We were just treated like anonymous cattle.

It was all so terrible...how I finally gathered the strength to get out, I do not know.

I hope others can learn from my folly. Don't leave MovieChat...

No usernames? 😱 What kind of place was this? Did they perform Member Mutilations?

WAIT, don't answer that! This will only put you in danger 😬

Hopefully others will learn from your object lesson. I can only imagine how awful this was for you.

Thank you. That others will learn from my misguided search for outside Internet excitement is my most fervent prayer, as well.

Already I am trying to make restitution to MovieChat. Yesterday I posted that the dress Marilyn Monroe wore as a presenter at the 1951 Oscars was a costume borrowed from THE HOUSE ON TELEGRAPH HILL, made by her studio that same year. I even provided pictures.

Of course this does not make up for my wrongs...but I hope it is seen as a start.

You're forgiven, your restitution has been duly noted as sincere penance for the sin of searching outside of MC for excitement. I'm sure I don't have to rub salt in your wounds by pointing out that not being allowed individual member names was a huge red flag.

Trials and sentencing takes long in America.

Maybe it’s because it’s a case without precedent and the judge has a lot of research to do to figure out how to sentence him.

I’m very curious about this other site you were on! I miss the IMDb boards. Not too much action over here.

In most jurisdictions, a pre-sentencing report must be prepared first. Five months is not unusual.

So if someone has been allowed to post bail and does so, they remain free until the sentencing? Except in Cosby's case he is under house arrest. Why is that? BC he is a danger to the community?

Brock Turner's sentencing occurred 2 months after his conviction.

reply

The time between conviction and sentencing will vary depending on the offense and the docket backlog of the jurisdiction.

I assume house arrest was ordered because he is very wealthy and is probably considered a flight risk for that reason.

reply

You're right. He was considered a flight risk for that reason.

That did come up after the verdict was read. That was when he called the prosecutor an a$$hole. Prosecutor wanted his bail revoked bc he has an airplane. Cosby: "He does not have a plane, asshole! I'm sick of him!"

That French guy busted out of prison with a helicopter. I'm sure Cosby could do it too, lol.

Yes.

I think if it's a felony offense, you usually just go back to jail, and the time is later deducted from your sentence. Like, if you are a convicted murderer or rapist (as Cosby is), they don't just set you loose on the public while they decide on the sentence.

That's part of what the house arrest is about in Cosby's case.
