GRAPES OF WRATH

I'VE SEEN JOHN IN JUST A CHUNK OF THE OVER 300 PICTURES HE WAS IN BUT "WRATH" WAS BY FAR HIS BEST PERFORMANCE. AS THEY SAY, HE STOLE THAT PICTURE! I DON'T THINK THAT GETS ADDRESSED PROPERLY. IT'S NOT CAUSE HE DIED IN IT EITHER. HIS EYES WERE MESMERIZING IN EVERY SCENE HE WAS IN. NEVER SAW HIM MAKE A CHARACTERIZATION LIKE THAT AND UNTIL I SAW "WRATH" I THOUGHT HE WAS JUST A SCRAP HEAP ACTOR AND ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE AS DRACULA.

I liked his bit in "The Grapes of Wrath" as the corrupt, holy-roller preacher with a streak of decency and courage (see the scene where he conks out the trigger-happy goon who had shot an innocent by-stander).

He was mesmerizing in Grapes of Wrath. Great actor, I want to see more of his work from the forties.
