Quotes about Cate (Post your favorite!)

We used to have a really good thread here full of quotes about Cate by her fellow actors and people she knows and/or has worked with, but it appears to have been lost because IMDb randomly decided to purge this board recently.  I thought I'd restart it with some of my favourites that I've saved over the past few years. I'll be adding more, please feel free to add your own if it's not here!

For more, there's a great tumblr devoted to the topic here -> http://quotesaboutcateblanchett.tumblr.com

"I saw Cate in Streetcar Named Desire on Wednesday night. Liv Ullman directed it. I will say right here that it was perhaps the greatest stage performance I have ever seen."
- Jane Fonda

"That performance was as naked, as raw and extraordinary and astonishing and surprising and scary as anything I've ever seen, and it didn't have anything to do with what clothes she took off, you know what I mean? She took the layers of a person and just peeled them away. I thought I'd seen that play, I thought I knew all the lines by heart, because I've seen it so many times, but I'd never seen the play until I saw that performance."
- Meryl Streep (after seeing Cate on stage in A Streetcar Named Desire)

"She’s an actress that is not only gifted and talented. Cate Blanchett is above all a brave actress. One has to be brave, for example, to play in A Streetcar Named Desire in Broadway. I really admire her enormously, and I’d really love to resemble her."
- Meryl Streep again

"I always say everyone was lucky enough to be in a Cate Blanchett movie."
- David Fincher

"No, Cate Blanchett is. I'll be her lady-in-waiting."
- Nicole Kidman (when asked in an interview if she's the Queen of Australia)

"Cate is incredibly intuitive, highly intelligent, physically free and playful. She has good theatrical sense and she keeps her feet on the ground. And, of course, she's just gorgeous."
- Hugo Weaving

"I’m, what, probably the 200th person to say that Cate is a fantastic talent. I’m not comparing two people or two actors, but it’s evident to me that Cate is undertaking today the roles which 15 or 20 years ago would have been offered to Meryl Streep. They’re both tremendous talents, each among the biggest and best not only of today, but I think in screen history. And I love it that Cate’s willing to join in with Indy. Some actresses or actors on that level of acclaim would think it beneath them to participate in this. I actually know of some performers who are snobbish enough to want to appear in things that are not big hits."
- Harrison Ford

"Working with Cate Blanchett, on and off the screen, has always been a highlight for me. She embodies the perfect combination of consummate actor and world-class fashion icon.''
- Giorgio Armani

"I'm not surprised at all at the level of her success with acting, but she would've been equally successful if she'd chosen to run the World Bank. She was always going to be a sensational human being and a great woman, whatever she chose to do."
- Felicity Donnoli (Cate's high school drama teacher)

"Cate Blanchett is mesmerizing. I don't know why. It's beyond my understanding. Why we all want to work with her is she elevates the rest of us. She's just got some ethereal grace and elegance that's beyond me, and an acute understanding of human nature. She's just exquisite. She's otherworldly."
- Brad Pitt

"In this world where celebrity trumps talent, Cate, God bless her, is an actress."
- Dame Judi Dench

"She's the best actor working today. Not actress, actor. Intimidating, in a way, to work with an actor that good."
- George Clooney

"She is the woman of a thousand faces and I find it as paranormal as some of our premises that she can so utterly transform herself into the character she is playing and then the second that I say ‘cut’, she is back with her Australian accent and kids on her knees being a mom and wife, and a really good mate for the other cast members and the crew."
- Steven Spielberg

"Once you have her, you already know that you’re moving away from the one-dimensional, the two-dimensional and you’re into the multi-dimensional. She’s an absolute thoroughbred as an artist. She has a skill level just off the charts."
- Kenneth Branagh

"Do I think Cate Blanchett is the most spectacular creature that ever walked the planet? Yes, I do."
- Russell Crowe

"Her husband doesn't know but she and I are going to get married quite soon. Which will surprise a lot of people."
- Ian McKellen (a.k.a. the openly gay Ian McKellen, lol)

"Cate Blanchett. Oh my God. I may turn."
- Ian McKellen again (he really loves Cate, it's adorable)

Philippa: "It was the first time that Cate had worked with Ian and Ian had worked with Cate."
Peter: "And Ian fell in love."
Philippa: "They totally fell in love. They have to do a play, I think. It would be extraordinary, they work so brilliantly..."
Peter: "Ian was trying to get back in the closet as fast as he could. It was quite incredible, he was absol... I've never seen somebody so much in love."
- Peter Jackson and Philippa Boyens in the commentary for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey talking about the Cate/Ian lovefest

"I love Cate. I’m in awe of Cate. At the time, me and Emily Mortimer were pathetic little wannabes of Cate. We heard that she would go out jogging in the morning, so me and Emily, who were both smoking 40 a day, went too. We’d make it to the second lamppost along from the hotel, wheezing."
- Kelly MacDonald (Elizabeth co-star)

"She just has this chameleon-like ability to inhabit other people in a way that's somehow more striking and alarming to me, as a professional actor, than anybody else I watch."
- Matt Damon

"I had to do this one big scene with her and I was really nervous. She is so beautiful... but she's married dammit."
- Elijah Wood

"For her high profile and everything else she does, she is one of the most down-to-earth actors I have ever met. She is divine."
- Lee Pace (as a sidenote, between this and Elijah Wood and Ian McKellan above and Richard Armitage, Evangeline Lilly and Craig Parker also admitting they have crushes on Cate, was there anyone on the LoTR/Hobbit sets that wasn't in love with her? )

"She is one of the best actresses out there at the moment. She is beautiful, but at the same time she’s very powerful — she doesn’t seem like the person who would be told what to do."
- Ellen von Unwerth (Fashion Photographer)

"There's a reason someone like Cate is a massive movie star, and it's not just because she's a really good actor. It's also how she conducts herself. I was really taken aback by that. She is so compassionate, but she also has such an awareness of every person around her. You can meet lots of actors who are in their own world and do their own thing, and they have no idea what’s going on and they don’t know anyone's name around them. Cate has a real awareness of everyone around her. She wants to know that everyone else is doing all right. That's really refreshing. She's fearless. She's not afraid to do anything, but she's got such a physical grace that it's really special to watch how she holds her body and moves on set."
- Richard Madden

"Cate Blanchett. After working with her, I can say she is actually the image of feminine perfection. She has her really lovely kids on set, is super professional, incredibly intelligent and nice to everyone. I think she might actually be a perfect human being."
- Holliday Grainger (after being asked 'Who is your acting inspiration?')

"I don’t think the glamour girl is necessarily the actress who makes it. I think movies are far more interesting and there is a certain type of girl who is quite strong – like Cate Blanchett, who is very individual and a striking-looking woman."
- Angela Lansbury

Thanks for reposting this great topic. I enjoyed reading the various quotes - however, there's one quote that needs a correction:

Hi Ruben! Yeah, I know but I copied that quote directly from a website so I can only presume that Meryl mistakenly believed it to be a Broadway show or was misquoted slightly.

Anyway, here are some more:

"I was scared more than anything! I don’t know about starstruck. But it’s like your eyes are immediately drawn to her when she's in the room. And when you talk to her she's one of the nicest people, so that dispels all the views you have of her as Cate Blanchett. She's just a really nice person."
- Andrew Simpson (Notes on a Scandal co-star)

"If anyone was born to be an actress, it's Cate Blanchett. She's extraordinary."
- Joe Wright

"Cate is one the best actors of our generation. She's also remarkably brave in her choices. Unlike some other A-listers she’s not interested in playing herself on screen. She's not playing Cate Blanchett so she doesn't want to be glamorous necessarily or insist on having the same colour hair or have that reference; she wants to truly inhabit a character."
- Morag Ross (Cate's makeup artist)

"She's one of the greatest actresses of our time and you can tell to her core she's an actress. It's all about the work for her. I think it has a lot to do with she took a break from film to become the artistic director of the Sydney Theatre Company, and I find that very admirable. That somebody – when they’re at a certain point they're probably being offered everything under the sun – can actually just turn around and say no and step away from all of that."
- Saoirse Ronan

"When I was about 14 years old at school we had a copy in our rec room of Elizabeth starring Cate Blanchett and we just watched it over and over again. Then I met Cate in Sydney because she had worked with my co-star Joel Edgerton. They had done A Streetcar Named Desire together, so we all went round to her house for lunch. She was so wonderful. She lived up to my expectations."
- Carey Mulligan

"As far as I'm concerned, Cate Blanchett is a goddess, but she's really down to earth. She's got all those Oscars, she's made all those amazing films and she could spend her whole life doing that, but what does she also do? She gives birth to three boys and creates her own theatre in Sydney."
- Sylvester McCoy (The Hobbit co-star)

"It's like when we’re submerged with emotion at the sight of a landscape and we can't explain why. I think of Cate Blanchett. She’s magical. She has the aura of the great actresses from the 40s."
- Eva Green (when asked about her 'definition of beauty')

"Her work is incredible. She's a very honest performer. There's never a point in a scene where she is taking away from her co-stars, but at the same time she stands out. That's someone who's very sure of who she is. She's only ever trying to be the character. She's not trying to be a movie star. She just happens to be outstandingly beautiful and luminous on screen as well."
- Sonam Kapoor (Bollywood actress)

"I not only forgot my dialogue in the scene, I forgot that I was acting. I forgot I was on a movie set, and I just stood there staring at her."
- Val Kilmer (admitting he had a crush on Cate when they filmed their scenes in The Missing)

"When I started to really appreciate acting as an art form, I fell in love with Meryl Streep and then with Cate Blanchett. I remember seeing Cate in Elizabeth and thinking, Who is that? What is she doing? Oh my God. How does she do it? I love watching actresses and asking myself those questions. The biggest trick to acting is hiding the trick, you know?"
- Emily Blunt

"A lot of male actors these days disappoint me because they substitute intensity for acting. The best acting today is being done by women and there's none better than Cate. Cotillard, I worship her. There are some men I admire, not many. I love Colin Firth, Clive Owen and I love Leo [DiCaprio] when he gets to do a film that's worthy of him. So when the phone call comes, 'Do you want to come work with Cate?' the only answer you can have is 'Yes'. I mean, Woody doesn’t pay much, so you're not there for the money. You just want to be a part of something great. And Woody really put Cate through the machine, because she's so talented she could do it, take after take after take of very, very, exhaustive emotional scenes. I sat there at the end of the day and looked around at some of the people, and *beep* she's unbelievable. We were all gobsmacked."
- Alec Baldwin

"There is the, what can I say, the female version of Daniel Day-Lewis, and that is Cate Blanchett. To be able to take on the persona and one of the most iconic female voices of the 20th Century, in Katharine Hepburn, one of the most immediately recognizable voices, and being from Australia as well.… Taking on that, you have to be a true chameleon and genius."
- Leonardo DiCaprio

Exactly! No one can compare. Normally, I am not without words, but Cate can leave me speechless. Whoever referred to her as otherworldly was so on point.

Love all the quotes you're taking the time to post. I heartily agree - Cate Blanchett is incredible and amazing. However, I disagree with Alec Baldwin - Cate isn't a female version of Daniel Day-Lewis or anyone else - she's an original creation and IMO a goddess of stage and screen.

Hi Ruben, I do agree with you, Cate certainly has no comparison. She is utterly unique and that's one of the reasons why we love her. But just a small correction, that was actually Leonardo DiCaprio who compared her to Daniel Day-Lewis, not Alec Baldwin. 

I'm glad you're enjoying the quotes, I'll post some more later.

Yeah I missed the quotes thread. There were some I had, but will have to search for them.

I won't post only favourite quotes but also just quotes from others who speak about/admire her.

Here is one from Melissa Benoist who plays Kara on Supergirl

"I look at careers like Cate Blanchett’s and I admire them so much. I want that variety, I want to travel the world." - Melissa Benoist

Thanks for adding, mysteryfan!

Here are some more:

"Well, Cate's an incredible woman and an incredible actress, first of all. She’s very focused at what she does. And I felt in working with her that she had this tremendous amount of work to do in relation to her own character and her own role in the film, but she was always aware of everyone else around her. And particularly for me, I felt that there was a watchful eye over my character, over scenes, over dialogue. And it was nice to have that there, you know? So there was a very comfortable feeling from me towards Cate, both professionally and personally."
- Abbie Cornish

"I met Cate today for the first time! She's the sweetest person. I tried not to geek out in her face. I admire her as an actor. I think she's an incredibly well-spoken and smart and thoughtful woman. She always carries herself with such grace. No matter how silly the questions are — like today at the press conference, there were some silly questions, but she handled it with humor and grace. It was great to meet her."
- America Ferrera

"The first time I saw Cate I was 13. It was in Elizabeth. I couldn't believe that she existed. She was like something from another world to me. When I watched her, I couldn’t understand how she was doing what she was doing. That's my favourite kind of acting. So yeah, I've looked up to her since I was a kid, and her body of work is just incredible. Getting to work with her was just amazing. That was actually one of the things that made it very easy for me. In a lot of ways, when I was with Cate, just reacting to her came very naturally."
- Rooney Mara

"Cate Blanchett is superwoman. She is amazing on every level. I think she is flawless as a person."
- Hugh Jackman

"It changed my life. There's a scene where she does this little nose sniff and, I swear to God, I spent the first six years of my on-camera career trying to reproduce it. I never succeeded. People kept saying, 'Do you need a tissue?'"
- Anne Hathaway (on Cate's performance in Elizabeth)

"She is tremendously down-to-earth, a very easy person to talk to and relate to. And she is completely unimpressed with herself, which makes her about the only person in the world that feels that way."
- Mary Mapes (the journalist/producer that Cate played in Truth)

"I love her. To be working opposite her, I felt incredibly lucky. Because of who she is. What a phenomenal actress she is and how bright she is. And also the kind of person she is. She's a great friend, and I feel very blessed that it was her. Even though she is one of the greatest actors working today, she’s one of the kindest, most generous people you would ever meet, really. She’s how you want to be as an actress, and as a person."
- Sally Hawkins

"She does what very few actresses do: she doesn’t only show the soul, what is inside of you, she also dares to show what is not always pleasant and, by being so honest doing that, she is incredible. Most actresses try to defend themselves or their characters so they will in the end be sympathetic. Cate does not think that way, and that is why her characters always are sympathetic because we recognise ourselves in her."
- Liv Ullmann

Here are some more

David Fincher
I always say everyone was lucky enough to be in a Cate Blanchett movie.

• Roger Ebert
That Blanchett could appear in the same Toronto Film Festival playing Elizabeth and Bob Dylan, both splendidly, is a wonder of acting.

• Shekhar Kapur
Cate is willing to throw herself into a chaotic state out of which something will arise. The fluidity you get in Cate is also because of the contradictions inside her. I was looking for somebody who could portray not only a reality but an ethereal quality. This ability to be both vulnerable and totally ruthless. Cate’s absolute ruthlessness is with herself, an obsessive ruthlessness about her craft.

• Hugo Weaving
Cate is incredibly intuitive, highly intelligent, physically free and playful, nothing that like all the actors in the Sidney troupe, Blanchett is classically trained. She has good theatrical sense, and she keeps her feet on the ground. And, of course, she’s just gorgeous.

• Meryl Streep
She’s an actress that is not only gifted and talented. Cate Blanchett is above all a brave actress- One has to be brave, for example, to play in A Streetcar Named Desire in Broadway. I really admire her enormously, and I’d really love to resemble her/

• Jack Nicholson
Charlize Theron and Cate Blanchett are very good actresses.

• Todd Haynes
When Cate Blanchett starts directing, it’s over for all of us.

Kate Bosworth
When I watch people like Cate Blanchett act, I don’t know what is going on in her life, you just get lost in her performance and that’s what I hope to do as well.

I’d love to work with Cate Blanchett. To me, she’s as good as it gets. She really is absolutely amazing.

I would love to work with Cate Blanchett! I just think that she’s one of the most incredible actresses of our generation and I admire her tremendously.

Brad Pitt
Cate Blanchett is mesmerizing. I don’t know why. It’s beyond my understanding. Why we all want to work with her is she elevates the rest of us. She’s just got some ethereal grace and elegance that’s beyond me, and an acute understanding of human nature. She’s just exquisite. She’s otherworldly.
