What the Hell Happened to Elizabeth Berkley?

http://lebeauleblog.com/2015/01/30/what-the-hell-happened-to-elizabeth -berkley/

In the early 90’s, Elizabeth Berkley was a rising star. After several years on television, she was ready to make the leap to the big screen. Showgirls was a huge opportunity. The script was written by one of the most successful screenwriters in Hollywood and the director was A-list. The last time Paul Verhoven and Joe Eszterhas collaborated, they made a star. But this time, things worked out differently. Instead of becoming an A-list actress, Berkley’s movie career went down in flames.

I have a theory, and I hope you're not a big fan of hers.....she's just not good as an "adult" actress. SBTB is still a guilty pleasure of mine, but I didn't like her in anything else after that. I even caught a Lifetime movie just a few weeks ago where she starred as a high school teacher accused of having an affair with a student, and I couldn't even finish watching it. I think there's something in her acting style that comes across as fake, forced, and overdone. Someone in Hollywood must agree, and that's what happened to Elizabeth Berkley

She clearly could of made better choices. Showgirls destroyed her Movie career and she should of adjusted to that reality. Then tried to prove her self again by joining a Prime Time tv show. She possibly thought that few more Big Movie opportunities would come her way. I like her couple episodes arc on NYPD Blue though.

I just happened to see Elizabeth Berkley on TV 3x this week and remembered how promising her career looked at one point. One of the movies I caught was The Real Blonde, which I love, another one was Any Given Sunday, and the last one was a Hallmark Christmas movie of some kind.

I might be the minority here but I think that her doing Showgirls was such a good and ballsy move. It gave her an edge and proved she had drive. I've always liked the movie and I think she's excellent in it. The thing is, her character was extremely unlikable. That, added to the blatant (yet appropriate) vulgarity of the movie, didn't earn her the respect she deserved for making it.

Some indie directors seem to have taken a liking in her either way and she was in a bunch of interesting movies shortly after Showgirls (usually as part of an ensemble cast). She worked with Woody Allen, Stone, etc. Some actors can be forgettable in average movies and really shine in the hands of good directors and I beleive she's one of them. She has charisma and seems open to playing very different characters.

I guess being blacklisted by major movie studios ultimately took a toll on her career and she had to go back to focusing on TV. She kept a really good attitude about the whole Showgirls backlash though. I wish we'd see more of her on the big screen.

She owns Showgirls and have liked the movies and shows she has done since.

I don't ever remember her being a rising star. She was on par with the rest of her Saved by the Bell alumni and all of them are just as obscure today as she is. Of course she's not as big of an "F" up as Screech, but still as an actress she was never on the cusp of superstardom.
