has this guy ever directed a good movie?

Don't get me wrong, I like Warren Beatty. He's as classic a movie star as it gets. When he's given the right role, he can give some truly great performances (McCabe & Mrs. Miller comes to mind). However, after having tried watching Reds today, only to wound up turning it off out of sheer boredom. And having seen Dick Tracy and Bulworth and feeling somewhat underwhelmed by the first and downright hating the latter, I'd have to ask, has this guy ever directed a good movie?

His films are all so ambitious yet, they all seem to fall short on actual storytelling. They also all seem to be driven by ego in some way or another. So I wanna ask, are there any films that he directed that are worth watching at all?

I haven't seen Dick Tracy since it was out; I liked for it's vision, tho the 3rd act was weak. I consider Heaven Can Wait a very good, if not great film. As for his others, you may be correct.

Personally, I think Reds is flawed but excellent - better as an historical epic than as a romance, admittedly, but handsomely mounted, beautifully acted and always interesting. It certainly never bored me even when it didn't quite reach its ambitious goals.

Heaven Can Wait isn't bad. Not a patch on Here Comes Mr. Jordan but an amiable enough comedy.

I can take or leave Dick Tracy and also disliked Bulworth.

Was never fond of the guy, though I did enjoy Bulworth for its political satire and it’s impressive cast, Halle Berry, Don Cheadle, Paul Sorvino, Sean Astin, Christine Baranski, Oliver Platt. He does have a big ego and demands to do multiple takes. Gene Hackman, who worked with Beatty on Reds, couldn’t bear being directed by him and turned down a role in “Dick Tracy”.

He's a notorious perfectionist on both the movies he directs and (to the grief of his directors) on those he only acts in. For someone of his longevity and stature, he's made very few films, reflecting his extreme pickiness at choosing projects. I doubt "Town & Country" "killed" his acting career--the last time he was an actual box-office star was probably 1978's "Heaven Can Wait"--so much as it reinforced his disinterest in acting in projects he didn't have complete control over. Then probably worries about age as well as his usual skittishness toward committing to a film led him to stall and stall and stall until he was de facto retired. A pity his intelligence was always so cautious in terms of making industry decisions--he could have been a major American director. Certainly "Reds" and "Bulworth" are more inspired and risky in terms of both subject and style than anything fellow actor-turned-director Clint Eastwood has ever done. But Eastwood on the other hand has always shot very quickly and doesn't give studio headaches. He's made several masterpieces compared to Beatty

He directed "Heaven Can Wait", which is a good movie, if you like lightweight comedies with more serious underlying theme. I saw it again a few years ago, and it's a film that succeeds in its aims, it's charming, funny, romantic, and even a bit touching now and then.

But as far as I know, that's his only good directorial effort. He should have stuck to lighter material, and he didn't.
