What's wrong with his voice

I just saw his ad for DirectTV. He was hoarse. Now something tells me that if all he had was a cold, they could have postponed the shoot. So what's wrong with him? Is he seriously ill?

Something is definitely wrong with his ear/nose/throat area, and it must be some chronic condition. I noticed it ever since The Skeptic (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0493451/). In everything he's done recently it sounds like his nasal passages are constantly blocked. Wonder what it is...

Maybe all the coke he used to do. That's my guess, anyway.

I came to this board today (09/2010) with the same question. I caught him on redneck wedding this week on CMT--maybe it was a rerun, not sure.

I just watched "Chasing Christmas" on Netflix and came here to find out if anyone else noticed this. He sounds like he has nasal congestion to me. I wonder if he has undiagnosed allergies or sinusitis.

I saw him playing Candice Cameron's father on some corny Christmas movie on Hallmark and he sounded very nasally like the way you might sound if you had a clothes pin on your nose, just terrible. Not only that he's just an odd presence on screen.

I do not have any major visual impairments (I wear glasses or contacts to correct my vision) but I hear much, much better than I can visually recognize someone. I'm not sure if it's because I play the piano or not but I've always been able to differentiate the slightest changes in tones and inflections. Tom Arnold has ALWAYS sounded "nasally" to me and it does seem much worse since his weight loss. I agree with you about his screen presence as well. I think a lot of people are put off by him because it seemed like he only became famous by using Roseanne to get some kind of name recognition. Of course, nobody knows what goes on in another person's marriage but he tends to "rate" pretty low like Kevin Federline who is another guy made famous by marrying a very popular celebrity and then walking away. I don't believe Tom is a talented performer but I don't believe it really matters considering all the talentless people being shoved down our throats all the time. I guess it's true. It's not what you know, but WHO you know.

You know everything you wrote is true. It is weird seeing somebody that got famous because of who he married. It's hard to believe he would have done ANYTHING in showbiz if he didn't marry Roseanne. I remember when Roseanne forced the network to give him his own sitcom, TWICE!! There was a time in the 90's where he starred in FOUR dreadful movies in about ONE year and each movie was in the theaters for maybe a week. They bombed so quickly nobody knows the movies even came out. He's horrible but for one reason or another still gets work and it makes no sense. Does he actually have fans?
