The Paul Verhoeven curse.

First I want to say it, this guy is pure genius. Now to the main point, all of his films have either become classics or have given lasting impressions (except Hollow Man, screw that). As with most succesful films, those received either sequels or reboots or both...and all of them have failed hard (well, maybe Robocop 2 didn't).

Why? Because this man knows how to give a certain depth to a movie, to make it metaphorical and interesting without making it pretentious but at the same time not leaving it as something with half baked ideas. And if may I add, movies that had very simple scripts.

The other point is, as sequels (with certain movies) went by they forgot these themes entirely or did not understood them correctly. Watch Robocop 2 throw out the window Murphy's recovered humanity to focus way too much on corporativism or its reboot being...devoid of being bold enough to explore the original's themes.

What do you guys think? Do you think it was more about the working team he got? Or just pure blind luck?

Hollow Man was cutting edge!!! The CGI was mind blowing in that period of Hollywood history. I adore this movie.

I agree... 'Hollow Man" was pretty damn good!!

And I am an avid fan of Paul Verhoeven... the films I own by him are:

- Turkish Delight
- Soldier Of Orange
- The 4th Man
- Flesh + Blood
- Robocop
- Total Recall
- Basic Instinct
- Showgirls
- Starship Troopers
- Hollow Man

And I intend to watch his more recent films after moving back to Holland.

You're wrong to screw Hollow Man. Screw Showgirls!
